Public defender fees don't generate substantial revenue and wouldn't cost municipalities much to eliminate.

The report recommends eliminating all municipal public defender application fees and ensuring public defense is funded through sustainable public investments.

The report finds that up to 90 percent of New Jersey defendants can't afford attorneys — and Black and Latinx/Hispanic residents are disproportionately harmed.

Municipal fees push defendants into debt and pressure them into entering pleas to avoid financial strain.

Exactly why New Jersey needs the Immigrant Trust Act!
ICE kidnapped a 7th-grader with a pending asylum claim and spirited him out of state without notifying his parents, seemingly with the cooperation of the local police in Everett, MA.

While 720,000 wealthy NJ families get permanent tax breaks under the "One Big Beautiful Bill," 360,000 poor, disabled, and elderly residents lose Medicaid and food assistance. This isn't economic policy. This is choosing winners and losers based on wealth.
It’s a great time to be rich in N.J. Here’s why.

Taxing the rich is good policy in more fairly asking those who have accumulated the most wealth from our society to pay more.

BUT an underappreciated additional benefit of taxing the rich is reducing the risk of an unaccountable wealthy class that evades basic societal rules.
