Despite major strides to #EndJusticeFees, Nevada keeps finding ways to charge incarcerated people & their families for basic needs. NV’s new tablet program, which costs $0.05/min & offers no subscription options, can cost families thousands every year.

For decades, Nevadans who couldn’t afford a lawyer were charged fees for accessing their constitutional right to counsel. These fees destabilized families, widened inequality, and failed to generate meaningful revenue — all while undermining public trust.

We all want safer streets, but automated traffic enforcement (ATE) isn’t getting us there.

Cities nationwide are turning to ATE tools, like red-light & speed cameras, to improve safety — but a system built on fines & fees comes with real costs.

The Cost of Maintaining the Status Quo: How to Evaluate the True Cost of Fines and Fees Collections
The harms of fines and fees on families have been well-documented, but families aren’t the only ones liable to be hurt. Governments that maintain these policies as “business as usual” are throwing valuable financial resources towards often fruitless debt collection, risking the stability of their budgets. With funding cuts rolling out across the country and legislative sessions beginning in January, now is the time for policymakers and reform advocates to understand the full fiscal impact of their state’s existing fine and fee policies — and the budgetary relief governments can see by enacting reform. Join us for a timely conversation exploring how to measure the full cost of maintaining the fines and fees status quo in order to champion meaningful, effective reform.

The FCC promised relief — instead, it’s levying a $215M tax on families with incarcerated loved ones.

If making money is more important than reform and reintegration, it’s not a justice system – it’s a business built on harm.
