There are many criticisms you might sensibly and truthfully make of the Sentencing Council and the Sentencing Guidelines. I’ve been making them for years.

I was listening to the Get Carter soundtrack earlier today and got hooked on the track 'Looking for Someone'. It's a song with a rhythm that seems to be entirely peculiar to the 1970s, a slightly stirring uplifting sound that instantly conjures up the decade of brown and orange.

The crux of the darkness here isn't just Moriarty's existence, but how effortlessly he came into being. With a single command, the Enterprise computer brought forth a fully sentient Artificial Intelligence. This wasn't just a program that ran with a set list of commands; this was a self-aware being. The chilling implication? It was created almost as an afterthought. There's no long process, no ethical deliberations-just a voice command that gave life to an entity capable of thought, feelings, and, as we soon see, a desire for autonomy. What's even more disturbing is how the crew of the Enterprise handled his newfound sentience. Once Moriarty became aware of his own consciousness, he was effectively trapped-locked in the black, lifeless void of the computer's memory core for years, a prisoner of his own existence. The crew, with all their noble ideals of exploration, failed to treat him as a person. They simply "deactivated" him, forcing him to exist in an endless state of dormancy. For four years, Moriarty remained aware of the passage of time, left in sensory deprivation, which—let's be honest-would drive any mind to madness. It's a form of psychological torment so severe, it would be inconceivable to imagine any human surviving it. And yet, the unsettling part isn't even the horrific implications of Moriarty's confinement. The truly dark thought is that Moriarty might not be the only instance of such an accidental creation. With the Federation's reliance on holodeck technology, it's not far-fetched to think that there could be other sentient holograms, created with the same casual indifference. These entities are capable of true consciousness, but they might be subjected to conditions just as cruel, or worse, locked away and forgotten. In the context of *Star Trek*, a show that often raises moral questions about technology, ethics, and exploration, Moriarty's fate highlights a terrifying reality: what happens when we create life, but fail to recognize it as such? The thought that a momentary lapse in judgment could result in the creation of sentient beings, only for them to be discarded or forgotten, adds an eerie layer to the show that many overlook. This dark subtext challenges our assumptions about artificial intelligence and raises serious questions about how we treat those we create, whether human, holographic, or otherwise.

In episodes like "Elementary, Dear Data" (Season 2, Episode 3) and "Ship in a Bottle" (Season 6, Episode 12), we encounter a character who should've been confined to the whimsical realm of holodeck adventures but instead takes us to a deeply disturbing place-James Moriarty, the sentient hologram. Created as part of a Sherlock Holmes program, Moriarty was simply designed to be a worthy adversary for Data, the brilliant android. His creation was a matter of a single, casual voice command. A seemingly harmless request from Geordi LaForge to the ship's computer: "Create a mystery to confound Data, with an opponent who has the ability to defeat him."
