Like Barber's Adagio, Max Richter's On the Nature of Daylight is two things at once: a heart-wringing musical expression of sadness; a piece which has become a shorthand cliché in cinema cueing the audience to feel sad, so overtly manipulative that it cheapens its own effect.

Always important - and especially during awards season - to remember that in order to like a film, you need not think it the best, but merely good.
