A new playlist for a new year. A post Christmas mix of old friends and new discoveries, that hopefully reflects the curious mix of melancholy and optimism that seems to occur at this time of year.

I come back to Withnail every couple of years or so. When I first saw it as a teenager it was just a very funny film about booze and squalor, now, as a man in his late 50s, every viewing adds another layer of poignancy.

This is completely fucking unacceptable. Shut this terrorist government down until it stops brutalizing its own citizens.
Today at 34 & Park in Minneapolis, a woman tried to drive down the street where a protest had broken out in front of a home ICE was raiding, saying she had a doctor apt to get to. ICE agents busted out her windows, cut off her seatbelt, and pulled her out before arresting her.

BBC London's reporting on the fall in the capitals homicide rate was really quite odd. You'd have thought it would be a bit of a 'feel good' story, but it was presented as 'yes, but what about all the other crimes' almost like they were quite keen on scaring their audience.

Been attempting to fight off the Sunday night terrors with this beautiful record. They're a Belarusian band living abroad for safety reasons and this record was recorded in Sao Paulo, so you get an intriguing hybrid of Eastern European and Brazilian music.

I've written to @libdemdaisy.bsky.social (my local MP) about this, I hope she'll reconsider her reasons for staying on X
If a new app was produced which had, as its core features, the generation of sexual deep fake images of children and calls for a violent global far-right revolution, then not only would it be swiftly banned, but you wouldn't have a single mainstream politician willing to associate themselves with it

I wonder how many people pardoned by Trump for the January 6th insurrection are now dragging migrants out of their homes and shooting innocent people in cars for ICE

Farewell to two of the 70s finest. RIP Terry Yorath and Martin Chivers. Martin Chivers was still playing in the Review Sunday league in St Albans well into his fifties.

It's such a shame that we only seem to come to some sort of understanding of our place in the world when we are running out of years to live in it.

What a beautiful film.
