Not really an overstatement to say that the test of a free society is whether or not comedians can make fun of the country's leader on TV without repurcussions.

this is incredibly true and tracks with a basic dynamic we've seen all along: the people who were cowed into submission by Trump's win were elites. regular people have never given an inch
generally speaking, and with the glaring exception of november 2024, the more directly democratic an institution has been, the better it has checked Trump (eg grand and petit juries); the more elite and insular, the less effective (the Senate, the Supreme Court, big business)

THANK YOU. As someone who lives in a red state but did not vote for this, whose voice and vote are drowned out because of gerrymandering and political nonsense, I am incensed when purity test lefties want to throw entire regions under the bus. Shut up and ask us about coalition building
When I see people online, even in jest, suggest that people living in Republican-controlled states should be abandoned because of their politicians, I feel a deep heartache. New York CREATED Donald Trump and none of y’all are ever talk about it the way you disparage Alabama or Mississippi.

these guys have no theory of his mind. “he wants to change the subject from epstein!!” my man, he wants to rule over the country as a military-backed dictator and permanently disempower you politically, and probably eventually send me and my friends to camps. a domestic deployment is a big deal!

Late last night I mapped crime rates for cities in OH, SC and WV to show how often they exceeded the rate in DC — where those states’ governors are sending National Guard troops to “combat crime.” www.pbump.net/o/more-peopl...
More people in Ohio need protection from violent crime than there are people in D.C.
Governors of three states — Ohio, South Carolina and West Virginia — are sending members of their state National Guards to D.C. to … well, theoretically to combat crime but, if the past week is any in...

The comments on this… please stop blaming folks in red states for their shit government. Missouri was purple until 2018, at which point we were gerrymandered to hell and have been considered a lost cause ever since.
Last year, a majority of voters in Missouri passed a ballot initiative enacting paid sick leave.

This year, Missouri's Republican governor signed legislation repealing it.

Do Republicans ever listen to the will of their voters?
‘A literal gut punch’: Missouri workers devastated by Republican repeal of paid sick leave
Voters approved sick leave mandate by 58% but lawmakers are caving to lobbying by the state’s chamber of commerce

1000% this. My local public radio station (blue city, red state) just exceeded its fundraising goal by 250k in two weeks, primarily with small donors. Continuing to care and acting on that care, matters.
on the falsehood of PBS / NPR’s demise spreading faster than the truth, digital liberalism shows its teeth: accepting defeat in mourning instead of taking responsibility for what could be if we worked towards it…

the PBS / NPR stations are asking for your fiscal support. if you do not have that to give, advocate for their survival instead of dreaming of their premature defeat.

hey, can one of the reasonable centrist writers condescendingly explain to me again that it is overblown to call these people segregationists?
Interesting. New contracting memorandum from Secy of Defense says military contracts shld stop including language that bars contractors from running segregated facilities.

We Dems in Red States see this all the time.

Blue City voters pass a law; the Red State legislature "preempts" it.

It's their maddening, anti-democratic playbook.

And you can expect to see more of it nationally.

P.S. The GOP's love of "local control"? Total hogwash.

They want power. Period.

Wow indeed. This is disgusting. Give Karla a call and let her know she’s a bigot! 573-751-3599
wow. I just got off the phone with someone in Karla May’s office asking for clarification on her vote to uphold the Missouri ban on gay marriage this was the answer I received.

“Karla May voted her conscience on the amendment as the senator believes marriage is between one man and one woman”

Among other reasons why you want a neutral civil service: it will be important to have a comprehensive investigation into this crash by competent professionals who don’t owe their personal allegiance to Donald Trump, and whose primary concern is not protecting his poll numbers.

Flood the zone. Electeds, activists, & leaders, don’t assume people know what’s going on. Tell them everywhere that:

Trump & Republicans stopped Medicaid.

Trump & Republicans stopped housing assistance.

Trump & Republicans stopped schooling for children.

I hope they get what they think the rest of us deserve.
I hope everyone involved in Republican politics one day receives exactly what they deserve for all the hard work they put in.

I used to work for an elected official as the person who answered their emails. I can tell you from personal experience, if even twenty or thirty people all call an official in a day, they start panicking. This stuff does help.
I know you hate this advice. I know you hear it all the time, but for gods sake you need to be calling your congressperson. Now. Today.

If you have a GOP representative, you need to call and ask if they approve of stripping congress of its constitutional authority. If they like being powerless.

Don't spread rumors. Stick to substantiated data. Here's a rumor that spread a panic that this excellent news source found no basis for. missionlocal.org/2025/01/sfpd...
ICE confirms no immigration activity on Muni. But SFUSD helped spread rumor.
SFUSD sent emails notifying families that a middle school student claimed to have been approached by ICE. It wasn't true.

Looked this up and wrote to all of my reps from the hospital as my mom recovers from life-saving surgery that was developed from nih funded research at an nih-funded institution. These people are ghouls.
If you would like to see how much economic activity and grants and how many people are employed through NIH in your state, just use this handy website.

And then contact your Congressional Rep and tell them to prioritize NIH. www.unitedformedicalresearch.org/nih-in-your-...

SHARE WIDELY.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS.

With mass deportations starting today across the country, it is vitally important - for both citizens and non-citizens - to know your rights.

You have the right to remain silent. Assert it. You have the right to a lawyer. Ask for one.
