I read this based on KJ's rec and it is LOVELY. A historical mystery set in 1901 at Temple, with a lead who's a 30-years'-call silk, aroace and a little obsessive-compulsive, and full of compassion for the changing world around him. Brilliant and charming and warm.
I read A Case of Life and Limb (The Trials of Gabriel Ward Book 2) by Sally Smith and strongly recommend you do too, this is my new detective comfort read. Kept me emotionally and mentally engaged even waiting for results day!

The best authorial training I ever got was reading slush pile / editing at Mills & Boon. You want to discover how to write a good romance yourself? Read a hundred that don't work and think how you'd fix them.
Further to this: don't stick to consuming recognised masterpieces of media. You'll pick stuff up, sure, but it's hard to draw from near-perfection without simply imitating.
But if you read something that makes you go "this could have been so good if only...!" then you've learned what NOT to do.

It's true. One of the reasons I'm an author is because I read a trad-pubbed fantasy novel from the 80s when I was a teenager which was so mediocre that I went "Shit, if this can get printed..." and never quite gave up on that, even though it took me a while to make a proper go of it.
