as paradoxical as it sounds, compression socks get past so many of my issues with wearing socks and I almost prefer them to bare feet by now.

"you hate socks? what if we gave you even more sock and made it tighter?"

"yeah actually that might work"

It's almost like making the effort to learn a thing teaches you more about it than just asking the closest idiot to tell you what they think about the subject and copying that down
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

Honestly, the “genAI is a calculator” metaphor really falls apart because if your calculator gave you the wrong answer even 5% of the time, you’d be swearing at Casio to give you your money back, not fawning about how it’s so close to being revolutionary.
My calculator didn’t rely on bastardizing years of unrelated disciplines to give me the answer I remembered the right steps to calculate.

My calculator doesn’t remember 12 year olds typing “poo poo pee pee” into it and assume popularity equals correctness.

i don't agree with the attitude of some faculty that their job is to train people who can run the code, even if they don't understand the underlying physics

i want a society of people who are trained to be curious about the code they're being asked to run and capable of understanding it, actually

I hate asking for help, but my insurance finally cleared from my ER visit last month and I could use some help. Any donations, or even a share would help immensely and I'd be eternally grateful to y'all.

Hey folks, I often do posts calling for indie developers to link me their games so I can signal boost them. Today I want to do something similar for all trans creatives.

If you are a trans game dev, artist, writer, streamer or YouTuber, reply here with a link to your work. Only one rule: no GenAI.💜

I’m the parent of an autistic kid. What CDC is doing here is offensive.

It’s offensive to me. It says his autism is the result of my ignoring evidence.

It’s offensive to my kid. It says there’s something wrong with him (there’s not) and it would be better to risk literal death than be autistic.
Initially, some moms of autistic kids eagerly accepted vaccine lies, because that way they could reject the "refrigerator mother" hypothesis, which blamed autism on "cold" mothering.

Now, those same tired vaccine lies will likely be used to blame moms who choose to vaccinate their kids.

It’s a bit funny to me when folks accuse anti-AI artists of “gatekeeping.” My dude, Midjourney charges you $60 a month for images, while real artists remind you that you can make it for free and experience the joy of the process. So who’s really gatekeeping?

The sabotage is happening everywhere all at once; a gang of supremacists, so convinced of their own superiority that they never bothered learning much about the sum total of human knowledge, and who now, faced with their own vast ignorance about human progress, have made human progress their enemy.
CDC has overhauled its website to assert that “the claim ‘vaccines do not cause autism’ is not an evidence-based claim”

MIT’s NANDA initiative found that 95% of generative AI deployments fail after interviewing 150 execs, surveying 350 workers, and analyzing 300 projects. The real “productivity gains” seem to come from layoffs and squeezing more work from fewer people not AI.
MIT report: 95% of generative AI pilots at companies are failing
There’s a stark difference in success rates between companies that purchase AI tools from vendors and those that build them internally.

Remember, kids: being sick or disabled is a choice you make, not something largely due to societal factors, poverty, and random chance.

Make better choices!

Paying experts is important, and even if, miraculously, AI managed to rise to the level of human competence, morals and ethics demand paying humans.
