In Moby-Dick, the pulpit is described as being shaped like the bow of a ship. This was purely a literary invention of Melville's, but as the book became a classic it was modified to agree with the book!

I hear ya! It's totally understandable why some folks are easily scared by this stuff, but I like to think that a fascination with the paranormal isn't all that different from having a deep respect for nature. (In fact, I'd say it's more or less the same.)
