“Network” premieres today in ‘76

“.. we thought we were making a satire,” said Lumet. “But the extraordinary and frightening thing is how quickly it stopped being satire .. When the truth becomes entertainment, when rage becomes a commodity, the culture begins to eat itself.”

You’ve probably seen a joke like this one in an old movie about Democrats and Republicans having their own Thanksgiving days. But why do these gags exist in the first place?

It’s the Franksgiving controversy! In 1939, FDR moved Thanksgiving to accommodate an extra week of holiday shopping.

Many Republican-held states, so incensed that a Democrat would move such a seemingly time-honored tradition, refused to recognize the new date for SIX YEARS.

Moments like these lampoon the ridiculousness of the situation. Note the turkey’s defeated shrug in this bit from 1942’s Holiday Inn.

Outrage politics aren’t new! Sometimes it feels like we live in a uniquely polarized moment, but Franksgiving reminds us that outrage has long been part of the playbook.

Outrage politics are designed to exhaust us and force us to give in because it's easier to maintain the status quo.

And importantly, movies can help us see this history plainly! Movies are more than the stories they tell. They are primary sources, too. They’re windows into the past, and thinking about them critically can offer us alternatives for how we can act in the future.

Today, I’m thankful for movies! 🦃

I’ve got a massive instore advertising poster somewhere featuring this image. Couldn’t believe it when I walked past a bookshop as a Hendrix obsessed child so asked them to put it by for me. ‘A Penguin has always been a mind expanding experience’ written underneath
