One theory I have is that competence, self-control, responsibility, and expertise have all been feminized, leaving “masculinity” with the realm of impulsivity and petulance. So the divide is not really between “femininity” and “masculinity” so much as between adulthood and childishness.
Everything else aside, the idea that this is a model for many men of *masculinity* is so wild. This? This is "manly"? This is how people think it's cool to act?

"AI makes many things easier for many people and improves their quality of life. This is bad for society overall." sounds like an insane crank take but is I think true. Costly signals are good and useful.
I think this is an underrated source of the extent to which Bluesky is in a false consensus about public AI hatred. If you are a power user on a microblogging site you are basically by definition not going to see the "take the effort out of reading and writing" machine as being useful
I think more than anything else AI feels like a miracle to people with questionable literacy because it can read and write for you, and a lot of us who are highly literate underestimate how many of our society's leaders, esp in business, struggle with literacy.

For New Yorkers who work the night shift, it can be nearly impossible to participate in political life of our city.

So tonight we’re bringing this campaign to them — starting with taxi drivers waiting at LaGuardia.

the one thing i love about Utah were their low ABV beers
As I get older and am able to hang less I wish there were more low-alch beers that didn’t taste like shit. Like a 2-3% IPA that was actually good would be nice.

Hey NYC Bluesky, this lovely little restaurant that just happens to be down the street from me is struggling and could use your help. Please support, their food is excellent (and we are in dire need of good places to eat on Franklin)! agiscounter.com

it's straightforwardly racist to casually drop "like all affirmative action policies, [...] some hires will be less qualified". if you believe that's the point of it: oof 😬

I considered writing a long carefully constructed argument laying out the harms and limitations of AI, but instead I wrote about being a hater. Only humans can be haters.
I Am An AI Hater
I am an AI hater. This is considered rude, but I do not care, because I am a hater.

i was hosting a party the day It Almost Happened last year, and for the few minutes before we learned It Didn't Happen, i could feel a weight was lifted off everyone's shoulders. i cannot imagine the joy when It Happens.

My recommendation is, very strongly, that you learn to code if you want to and think it'll be fun, because in 20 years you'll be one of a dwindling number of people who actually know how anything works.

this is, and will always be the problem until it is dealt with. as stated elsewhere in the same thread, this same problem will happen if we increase market supply.

the only real solution will be to have the owners and lenders take on the failure in their investment. you're not guaranteed an ROI!
The question the public should be asking is *not*, how high do rent increases have to be to justify past lending decisions? The question we should be asking is, how do we ensure that the costs of building overvaluation are borne by owners and lenders rather than tenants?

Without wading into the discourse too much, the reason many (straight/cis) men are not getting laid is because toxic masculinity tells them they cannot under any circumstances laugh at themselves. It’s not that deep!

Precisely my point. The technocrats need to become accelerationists and need to be writing, thinking as one. I don’t think it’s funny, that’s just the rules of the game now. White collar wonks are still trying to act like there is something that will acknowledge them other than as ants to squash.

my two wishes:
* for the left to distinguish between liberal and "centrist", as they're distinct groups
* for normie liberals to be more ideological re: liberalism proper, vs. defining themselves as "not conservatives"
There’s a weird thing on this website and lots of left-wing subcultures, where people love to throw around “liberal” as an insult, but from what I can tell liberals voted overwhelmingly against Cuomo and are rallying behind Zohran now.
