I shared David's piece back when he wrote it, resharing it again along with my piece about NOAA from a week or so ago. Again, threat to NWS is real - but the cuts proposed to NOAA more broadly are way more dire and we need more awareness of that.

We don’t talk about fish enough in Philly, let alone a record breaking flathead catfish (72.5 pounds): www.phillyvoice.com/catfish-sout...
South Philly man reels in 72-pound catfish from Schuylkill River near new trail extension in Grays Ferry
The enormous flathead caught by Daniel Brown would have set a new state record, but the angler opted to release the fish without pursuing official certification.

If you take away nothing else from Beethoven’s life and writing:

Never forget that “it would be a crime against God’s gifts to humankind if I were to deprive society of myself” is the level of confidence and belief white men are raised to have in themselves. You deserve that for yourself also.
Today is Beethoven's baptism day, which means yesterday might have been his birthday, so I'm going to recreate the Beethoven birthday thread here

Feel free to mute this post if you don't care to see it all again

For the rest of us, let's celebrate my favorite musical weirdo

Day 7 of #Fishmas is all about that bass - the smallmouth bass, that is!

One of the most popular sport fish species in the #GreatLakes (and beyond), the Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus dolomieu) - also known by anglers as the bronzeback or brownie - never misses a beat 🎶 #25DaysofFishmas

Smallmouth bass is part of the sunfish family (Centrarchidae), which includes smaller cousins like bluegill and crappie.

Smallmouths are considered black basses (Micropterus), a group that also includes other species popular with anglers like largemouth bass and spotted bass #25DaysofFishmas

This is how you make great science text books
40 WAYS TO DIE IN THE PREHISTORIC. Enjoy!

These illustrations were made as scale drawing for a book about prehistoric creatures. Thought it would be fun to have a bit more interaction between the animals and human figures

Whatever non-musicians think it costs to be a professional musician, it’s way, way more

Basically any musician who isn’t at the very top is underpaid one way or another
I don't think people know about this outside the very particular corner of the music world I inhabited until very recently, so here's the deal. Musicians in "major" US orchestras are salaried, year-round employees. But unlike at most FT jobs, we have to supply all our own equipment.
First of all, as soon as he got into office in 2017, he and his cronies in Congress rammed through a massive tax break for zillionaires that completely eliminated my entire industry's ability to write off personal work expenses, which are massive. So that's many, many thousands right there.
