Three children died of the flu in Ottawa this month. If you have a small child, a good investment is a finger pulse oximeter to monitor pulse and oxygen levels. These data you can share with your doctor if symptoms are severe enough that you're considering an ER visit

No surprise: new analysis shows that heat pumps can deliver excellent performance even in older buildings with no meaningful correlation between building age & heat pump efficiency.

This is in line with my own experience of having a heat pump in a 1880 Victorian home with only modest insulation.

Re that survey on attitudes to masking someone said I should do…

“What do you think of masks in hospital?”

I’d like to ask

“If I could stop you from catching flu, COVID, RSV, and many other infections that we breathe in, would you want me to?”

It’s also about concerned, informed people, doing their best not to infect others.

I don’t want to be the source of someone else’s disability.
Masking isn’t about ideology. It’s about:

😷 immunocompromised children at school & their families not risking their health & lives
😷 people with Long Covid trying not to be reinfected
😷 disabled people protecting their protective system

That’s the stakes. /8

This study is amazing, it demonstrates that close contact is slightly, but far less risky for respiratory infections than total exposure time in congregate settings & poor indoor air quality (basically, airborne long distance transmission).

Engineers can solve this.

How’re the air changes, CO2 levels, occupational infection surveillance systems and supply of N95 respirators coming along?

Gender-based violence is an everyday reality, and it starts with minimizing misogyny
As we highlight 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and the upcoming anniversary of the Montreal massacre, can we take a moment to reflect on all the different forms this violence takes?

Here's an animated map showing the spread of the BA.3.2.* variant, nicknamed "Cicada".

The other main hotspots have been South Africa, Western Australia (since July) and Germany (from mid-October).

Locations are approximate - typically country and state/province.

Firstly, there is no mention of how public health officials ignored, denied and aggressively obstructed meaningful discussion and dissemination of the fact that COVID is predominantly spread by the airborne route.

Seeing some very similar signs to the 1968 flu pandemic.
We may see more than one wave and this variant of H3N2 seems to have a very long tail.
Wear a N95 or better when in public spaces. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Great 🧵 on the possible paths of BA.3.2. At the moment we know nothing about the nature of BA.3.2 infection in humans. It could be attenuated or it could inflict more severe illness. Important to find out (though I don't expect we'll see any evidence on that front for some time yet).
/1 A JN.1-like development is expected for BA.3.2 - acquisition of mutation(s) that increase ACE2 binding and/or antibody evasion followed by massive global spread.
