Don't forget literacy levels. This genuinely shocked me.

bsky.app/profile/colo...
Which also answers the current question, "How did we get here?"

Well, over half the country has literacy skills below the sixth grade, and one in five people (21 %, FFS) cannot read at all. And that just blows my mind.

Map reveals US adult literacy rates by state
The National Literary Institute reported that low literacy levels cost the country up to $2.2 trillion a year.

I guess you could say that the US is certainly *one of* the greatest countries in the world for:

- inequality & poverty
- billionaires directing public policy
- gun violence against children
- billionaires directing disinformation
- bad health
- crap electoral system
- delusions of self-importance

The greatest country in the world?

Not only is that demonstrably rubbish, it's precisely the insular, parochial, ill-educated and ignorant mindset that led to the US electing Trump.

Twice.

Trump is America's id.
It’s really something. The greatest country in the history of the world twice elected the most stupid, most ignorant, biggest idiot in the history of the world.

Our return would require admitting that Israel is a settler colony built on ethnic cleansing that has spent 77 years making indigenous people disappear. It would require acknowledging that the “only democracy in the Middle East” is actually an apartheid state.

Activism is the antidote to failing governments. Get active. Talk to friends and family. Join activist groups or start one of your own. Ring, write to and meet your MPs. Don’t accept inaction on climate, education, healthcare, aged care, corruption, lack of housing, NACC…
I get that the govt is failing in its responsibility to fill its job description but if we do nothing and just allow them to keep going are we any better?

My new piece on the alarming story of a Home Affairs whistleblower:
Derek Elias is still technically employed by Home Affairs, but he hasn’t worked full-time since July 2021, when he walked out on his role in Operation Sovereign Borders following what he describes as “a significant probity breach” involving lucrative contracts in Nauru. satpa.pe/nzO9RiX
Life as a Home Affairs whistleblower: ‘I’m just falling over’
Four years ago, Home Affairs assistant secretary Derek Elias attempted to report corruption in offshore contracts – the department’s response has left him mentally unwell and in financial turmoil.
