📢Global Carbon Budget 2025📢

Fossil CO2 emissions continue to rise in 2025 while the terrestrial carbon sink recovers to pre-El Niño strength.

The key findings are covered in two reports this year:

I wanted to offer some thoughts on the Gates climate memo that has been circulating this week. While I can't directly speak for others, I can say that my own response is one of dismay & deep frustration (and that this view is shared by many climate/Earth scientists). [1/n]

I am not a Very Serious Analyst but maybe there are some deep institutional problems here, wrt to CCS

Carbon capture for power stations specifically is just as subject to the overall dynamics of CCS: it never materialises like it's expected to.

Here's a new chart for ya: each blue line is what *should* have happened based on each report's planned state dates.

"it took about 65 years to exceed the 0.5-degree limit, just 28 years to reach the 1.0-degree limit, and it will be about 17 years if we exceed the 1.5-degree limit on a moving average in 2025 or 2026. This means that the period for each jump of 0.5 degrees is getting shorter and shorter."

Climate mitigation and adaptation measures are not costs. They are investments.

The true costs occur when mitigation fails and adaptation is too slow so we suffer from continually worsening extreme weather events like heatwaves and floods.

Invest now to reduce costs in future.

Around 70% of methane emissions from the energy sector could be avoided with existing technologies – and often at a low cost

And a large share of abatement measures could pay for themselves within a year, since the gas that is captured can be resold ➡️ iea.li/3EZJ1eK
