It's a microcosm of the problem on a national level. There's a somewhat progressive candidate and the Democrats are pulling out all the stops to install an objectively bad human being instead. Better a sex pest and racist than a leftie brown guy.

I still can't get past the idea that people in America are now supposed to accept that this is a valid form of law enforcement and just assume it's fine when random dudes in groups with face-coverings, no ID, no warrant, & no uniform grab people off the street and force them into unmarked vehicles
Not an original point but worth saying again - there is not a single element in this picture that identifies any of these folks as law enforcement agents. No badges, no uniforms, no vests. Out of context it just looks like a bunch of random guys are kidnapping a mayoral candidate.

The common trend in the arrests of Sen Padilla, or Comptroller Lander, or Marcos Leao, or any other US citizen, is that they are immediately released. The admin knows they have no legal standing. They know a legal challenge would create a bright line bar. It’s about the chilling effect. Full stop.

When someone brings up a book, do not reply with internet archive links to that book. That makes you a giant asshole.
Libraries exist. Lots of them have provisions for people without service in their area. You can even read lots of books electronically through a library.
