19-20 months from now, Trump will have pushed the economy off a cliff and left the civil service a smouldering husk. If you're a Democratic elected and you think a government shutdown from a CR fight is gonna be the thing voters remember, you need your fucking head examined.

Democrats Do Something Useful Challenge, 2025 Edition
I honestly think Dems have to resist the urge to say "I told you so" and instead ask ourselves how we present an extremely compelling ideological alternative to MAGA/DODGE...not just for one cycle, but for the long term.

That means addressing the decline of American Dream and wealth inequality.

It remains the case that the real dividing line across the center-left/left isn’t primarily about policy.

It’s between those who believe some kind of normalcy can be achieved through legal tweaks and technocratic fixes and those who believe our democracy is going to have to be rebuilt the hard way.
Two things are true:

This type of weak sauce learned helplessness from Democrats is pathetic.

Yet it’s true that the broad mobilization of civil society we desperately need in order to stop this authoritarian assault will create dangerous, volatile situations. That’s just where we are.
"activist leaders have told him and colleagues that they fear protests against Trump might eventually be used as a predicate for declaring martial law. Other House Democrats echoed this privately"

Something something in advance

There’s a word for people who say they oppose fascists but believe that fascists make a few good points or are right about some things.

(It’s fascists)

What we’re seeing is not the pendulum swinging back toward the right after the left went too far. We’re seeing a moral panic, a society-wide assault on a phantom leftist who wants to ban Dr. Seuss and arrest you for using the wrong pronouns and put kitty litter boxes in classrooms.

We need to push back really hard against this rapidly coalescing “backlash” narrative that places the agency solely with traditionally marginalized and "activist" groups who are therefore ultimately at fault for causing a supposedly inevitable reaction, a predictable, near-automatic response.
I am worried this is going to become the conventional wisdom over the next four years: If those pesky college students and activists and SJWs hadn't over-reached, Trump II never would have happened.

It is nonsense.

If you saw a person losing a game of chess to a dog, over and over, you would assume the person is losing intentionally, that they are losing on purpose. Probably to make money selling tickets to see the amazing chess playing dog.

Anyway, the dems

A small but meaningful part of the damn problem with the Democratic Party is that there is absolutely no meaningful internal party discipline — at least, not aimed at the party’s right. Discipline is only for progressives that are actually on program.

this remains a massive problem. a month of rampant law breaking and the constitution in abeyance and still no sign party leadership cares about anything but positioning themselves for the midterms
they don't know what to do because they think winning elections is their job. if they had substantive ideals that they fought for, and winning elections was merely an instrument for achieving those ends, they'd know exactly what to do. they don't even realize this is a problem.
give us a bit of time we've only had three months to prepare! it's not like Trump is a known quantity or that we were handed a complete roadmap for everything ahead in the form of a handy book of policy intentions they released like monologuing villains
