I know a young Black man (early 20s with a job) who is so desperate to find affordable housing that he is considering going through the DHS system as a homeless individual so that he can get housing assistance.

This is not the first time I've heard this strategy.
“As time passes, it’s become clear that having the home I want probably means leaving New York.” In a new essay, Naomi Jackson writes about how a notable number of Black residents are leaving the city — no longer able to afford it.

A notable number of Black residents are leaving the city — no longer able to afford it. I might be one of them.

It's easy to blame Lyft for Citibike's problems rather than confront the fact that we are running up against the economic constraints of a model that receives no direct taxpayer support.

Sanctioning Lyft and demanding more service doesn't change the economic reality that better service costs $$$.

Will never understand why @nyctransit.bsky.social refuses to change the outdated roll sin signs on the R68 Q trains.

The Q hasn’t terminated at 57th since 2017

Unless my gen-z friends are extremely uncool, “progressive content hub” doesn’t seem like something young people would say.

I think the thornier 800 lb gorilla is: How do we reconcile a largely market based system with public interest, especially in the age of social media.

What does it mean for an oligarch to purchase a major media org/platform? Should there be orgs like the BBC/NPR that increasingly invest/compete…
Does it seem like new platforms are going to coalesce to ever 'feel' like legacy media, or do we need to get used to having a fractured landscape of adhoc journalism orgs?

Twitter, Washington Post and CBS have been purchased and largely gutted and/or perverted and the effects are just starting to be felt.

I think it’s time we embraced a new paradigm on media and the public interest. There is no easy answer but it’s an essential convo.

FWIW one the simplest ways to increase the affordability of NYC transit *today* would be to auto-enroll SNAP recipients into Fair Fares via HRA adjunctive eligibility.

SNAP is a strong proxy for Fair Fairs eligibility and 75-90% of eligible NYers have SNAP vs only 30-35% for Fair Fares.

I will also say that I don't think I've ever seen a situation like this where it's <freezing for so long after a storm. Most of the times, the snow melts within a few days, there isn't one day in two weeks that will be above freezing after the snow in NYC, which is historic.
I think it's okay to admit there is room for improvement in snow clearance w/o having your NYC bonafides questioned. Not sure how this has become the dominant narrative--but the crosswalks are legitimately concerning for the mobility challenged and elderly and that should concern us all.

Pet Peeve: Saying that sidewalks are the responsibility of the property owner and not the city ignores the fact that it's *the city* that is ultimately responsible for enforcement.

...and if that accountability system doesn't work, then its *the city* that then is in charge of creating new system.

Noticing that the subway is generally under-appreciated in the comments on social: roughly speaking 70% of all NYCTA ridership in NYC is on the subway and this includes about 20% of bus riders who are either transferring to or from the subway (and would still pay the fare)
