Leave it to the HHS boys to depathologized HRT in order to pathologize menopause. “HRT has saved marriages, rescued women from depression, prevented children from going without a mother,” Dr. Makary said.
No, menopause does not kill women or cause divorce.

Progressive candidate with a strong final kick in the Seattle mayor's race....I do believe @taniel.bsky.social called this one by not calling this one.
LEAD CHANGE: Katie Wilson is now ahead of Mayor Harrell by... 91 votes.
That's out of ≈270K!
Seattle counted roughly 39K ballots today, & they broke in favor of Wilson by 11.4%, erasing the entirety of the incumbent's lead.

It's me again, just putting it out there that I am going to need space in 2026 for at least 5 events that can hold at least 100 people. Looking for accessible and also CHEAP spaces in NYC. None of the convenings will be charging people to participate. Thank you.

As a former Atlanta Beat fan--this is exciting news! There was strong support for the Beat when they were part of WUSA, the first pro women's soccer league in the US, & it was odd Atlanta didn't have a NWSL team. I mention the Beat in this piece on the 2023 WWC.

We're in an authoritarian crisis. And, although the majority of Americans back the Dems, Schumer still refuses to fight.
The Senate needs a new leader. I need a new U.S. Senator.
Nothing Schumer says is worth listening to. I'm going to block him from now on.

This is a strong statement, & I'm really glad House Dem Leader Hakeem Jeffries has vowed to fight on to prevent Republicans from continuing to decimate healthcare. Wish he'd use alt text with his posts. I've added it.

I mean it shouldn't have to be said: "Bernie Sanders...has encouraged his colleagues to keep fighting, saying that last week’s elections that were overwhelmingly favorable for Democrats 'showed growing opposition to Trumpism & his efforts to decimate the already-broken American health care system.'"
Democrats are considering a Republican deal to reopen government with a promise of a later vote on extending health-care tax credits—but no guarantee.
One Democrat says it'd amount to "unconditional surrender that abandons the 24 million Americans whose health care premiums are about to double."

It feels apt that a dead woman science writer gets the last word on this jerk.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.
Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."
Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

“Like so many other bits of Times coverage, the whole of the piece is structured as an orchestrated encounter. Some people say this; however, others say this. It’s so offhand you can think you’re gazing through a pane of glass.” “Orchestrated encounters” is the perfect phrase for this phenomenon.
It’s absolutely terrific.
I havent read such a banger of an essay in a very long time. This is so well-written!

There’s a young southern woman on tt doing an experiment: calling churches & asking if they can help her get baby formula, saying she can’t afford it. Of the 30+ she’s called, nearly every church has said no. The ones who said yes were:

Another look at the incredible Marta run that led to the penalty.

These are the most perverse times. The law contorts itself as the Trump admin fights to cut off peoples’ access to food.
The wording of this is highly unusual, and suggests that Justice Jackson is expecting the First Circuit to rule on a stay pending appeal (a longer pause of the district court's order) in the next few days.
I'll have more to say about this in "One First" as soon as I can write it up.

So far, not one who just read this 2-page document has said they understand what's going on with any certainty.
Unintelligible decisions like this are so unfair to the people who are suffering.

Very helpful analysis from @chrisgeidner.bsky.social on what might have motivated Justice Jackson’s decision: “But, it is also important to note that, procedurally, had she denied the request, the Justice Department could have gone to another justice.” Nonetheless, the whole situation is disturbing.
Updated report at Law Dork is published now here:
Justice Jackson temporarily blocks SNAP benefits order to allow appeals court to rule
DOJ asked SCOTUS for a stay as USDA was in the middle of completing its process for making full payments. Update: Jackson's order came a little past 9 p.m.
