man, can you imagine a world where we poured 1, 10, or 252 BILLION dollars[1] into maintaining/developing open source, programming languages, dev tools, teaching material, documentation, etc?

like, god damn. 1/10 of that, and AI would probably work better too.

We’ve made this investigation free to read because so many people in Sheffield are affected by this story.

Our journalists have been knocking on doors for weeks and we’ve had to employ lawyers because of the legal threats made against us.

We can only do this kind of journalism with your support.
“It broke my heart, that was my savings towards a new car,” one woman who paid Milne tens of thousands of pounds told us. “He has just wiped me out.”

Who is Andrew Milne - the solicitor sending "very aggressive" letters to Sheffield homeowners?

Hey look, Israel broke the cease-fire, twice, in two different ways, within 24 hours - again.
NEW: Israel informed the UN it will permit only 300 aid trucks into Gaza daily, not the 600 mandated by the ceasefire it just signed.

I know the headline everyone's running with is "erotica" but "we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues" and "we are putting personality back in ChatGPT so it will act like a friend" are diametrically opposed statements

that's the cause of most of the mental health issues
Oh good, ChatGPT is getting "erotica for verified adults" later this year

Every Reason Why I Hate AI and You Should Too
maybe it's anti-innovation, maybe it's just avoiding hype. But one thing is clear, I'm completely done with hearing about AI.

Generative AI, specifically, is a newer tech. But we already have mountains of research on algorithmic bias & the perils of putting ML in charge of decision making (especially when human lives are at stake).

Yet more companies laying off employees not because AI is replacing them, but because they need more money to fund their AI. I can't remember the last time I saw sunk cost fallacy at this scale.

It’s incredibly noticeable how often ‘and an army of outsourcers outside America and Western Europe’ is left out of these team sizes. That’s the part I find real uncomfortable.
This year's Summer Games Fest presentation was really concerned with how few people made a lot of those games, huh?

It feels kinda fucked up. Not just because they're often misrepresntating the real size of these teams, but because I think it's playing directly into a new(ish) flavour of dev hate.

Is the option of not allowing AI agents to deploy missiles already off the table, or is that still up for discussion?
