Today's column: "You may not have heard of the Working Families Party, but of the five Seattle citywide candidates endorsed by them, at least four won their Nov. 4 general election races: Eddie Lin, Erika Evans, Dionne Foster and Alexis Mercedes Rinck."
The successful third party you may not have heard of
Eddie Lin, Erika Evans, Dionne Foster and Alexis Mercedes Rinck were among the candidates whose campaigns were boosted by the progressive Working Families Party.

Even with only 50,000 ballots being counted, it seems likely that the percentages from today will be very telling. 🤞
Head's up from King County Elections on today's ballot drop: "We are planning to add about 100,000 ballots to the counts (countywide) in today’s results update around 4 pm. We expect about half of those to be Seattle ballots."

The number of received ballots has now surpassed 285,000, exceeding turnout from 2021! Many of those were Election Day voters, and over 100,000 votes have not yet been counted!

Talking to a friend and campaign volunteer who described how she recently convinced friends to take their ballots out of the trash! If you’re reading this, you likely have already voted or have a plan to vote.
But you likely also have friends, family and neighbors who are NOT planning to vote.

the sales tax on constructing just one 650sf 1BR apartment in seattle today is over $30k, and the MHA fee can be almost as high depending on neighborhood. at $22/sf that would add another $14k.
it's also insane we don't exempt affordable housing from sales tax on construction

Really interesting article and important history to remember.
I also find it interesting that we found a way to cut sales taxes to spur the construction of offices for tech, but we haven’t yet eliminated sales taxes for the construction of housing.

Not impressed with this ad.
Reminds me of Nancy Reagan’s “just say no” to drugs campaign. It’s an oversimplification of a complex problem, as if all we need to do is to “say no” to homelessness.

I havent seen pundits talk enough about how we have failed younger generations, and the impacts (including political) of those failures. Pundits are misreading things, imo, if they only view this as an anti-Trump backlash. Yes, that is a big part of the mood, but certainly not the only thing.
Yes, younger voters overwhelmingly support my campaign, and sure, the youth are the repository of idealism. But you know what else? They’re the ones who feel the affordability crisis in their bones, who can’t imagine building a life here because rent, food, childcare, everything costs so much.

Until relatively recently, making a profit selling your home wasn’t really part of the housing equation — your home value probably kept pace with inflation, and that was that.

This is going to be such an enormous issue for our society, for workers, for labor unions. With AI and automation rapidly advancing, we know that corporations will use this technology for their benefit/profit, to extract and control even more wealth and power, worsening inequality.
Amazon enjoys an estimated $11 BILLION in state and local subsidies, largely based on expectations of job creation.
Leaked documents show Amazon is working to automate 75% of the companies operations, eliminating 600,000 workers.
