A reading thread for 2025 💙📚: Toward Eternity by Anton Hur. Sci fi with undertones of A. S. Byatt. I enjoyed this and the multiple-narrator audiobook is really well done

The Mallorca rule applies here too: if you can't function outside of Bödefeld-Schmallenberg, just stay in fucking Bödefeld-Schmallenberg. Not like the rest of the world is jonesing for a visit from some of the least fun people on the planet.

MORE modest? From the European perspective, US Americans have always erred on the prudish side, what more can they do...
Americans aren’t getting naked in locker rooms as much anymore. It’s a striking reversal in cultural norms—one that could profoundly change how we view the naked body, Jacob Beckert writes:
The Disappearance of Everyday Nudity
American locker rooms are getting more modest. We’re losing something in the process.

Yes, especially when you port it over from X to do it. Stop that shit, my dude. It reflects poorly on you.
My perhaps controversial assessment is that when you share the propaganda of your enemies to call it out or to mock it… you’re still spreading their propaganda and maybe doing exactly what they hope you’ll do.

So much this. There's a certain very rich children's author who I don't follow, don't click on articles about, and yet I know every time she opens her mouth because people constantly repost it into my timeline. They're just amplifying her and I don't get it.
It’s like taking a stack of hateful flyers you find in a neighborhood and then walking around and handing them out and adding, “Wow, did you see this? This is awful.” …But then they are still left holding the flyers YOU gave them.

Why do we want audiobooks (that are not autobiographies) to be read by the author? I've just started a non-fiction book on a subject I'm very interested in but the stilted reading and the mispronunciation of foreign words is already wearing.

Culturally coherent = Stadtbild
A Conservative MP tipped as a future party leader has been condemned for saying large numbers of legally settled families must be deported, in order to ensure the UK is mostly “culturally coherent”.

In German news, Merz is under fire for saying refugee no.s have fallen, ‘but of course we still have a problem in our cityscapes'. Asked about the implication that migration was an unwanted sight, he just dug in & told the journalist to speak to his [German] daughters & see what they've to say. 1/2

What an utter waste of time and resources it is, that anyone with who needs regular medication has to go to their doctor’s office each quarter to have their health insurance card read before the digital prescription can be issued.

I’ve asked if they can prescribe for more than 3 months. No.

Annual reminder that without literary translators, most Nobel Prize-winning authors couldn’t be read by the committee/readers, so celebrate them too. Congrats @ottiliemulzet.bsky.social et al! This isn’t taking away from the author, it’s adding recognition of the miracle/labour/skill of translation.

Despite the quirky detail of the Syrian couple calling their daughter Angela and the heartwarming support they have received from their German helpers, this story is enraging. The system is broken.

I'll update as I go, but the first thing I'll share is every person's body & treatment is different. Some fear symptoms or side effects they might never get. Don't be afraid to fight 1/3
