Steady increase in flaring symptoms culminating in very bad pain / mobility day, immediately followed by a day of several inches of snow.

But no, there’s “nothing wrong” with me. They say. Clearly I should “just” exercise more.

It always amuses me when I pull a crispy iced rice pack out of the fridge and put it on my blazing hot joint and a mere minute later the pack is warmer than room temperature where it touched the joint.

What I want to say about Alice is this: we have not decided as a society that we want people like her to live as human beings. Currently, the regime under which she lived & died is closing off the elements that made her extraordinary life possible. Her work is literally being erased.
She was extraordinary, and extraordinarily generous. Alice Wong: I am so grateful to have been alive in her lifetime. She was one of our species' best. She deserved better. My her legacy be for a blessing.

So I did the thing before I chickened out (or came to my senses) and threw up a GFM as a stop gap measure. I hate doing it more than anyone will hate seeing another fund raiser.

“With so many marginalized communities, we’re basically the oracles…we’re the ones who see shit before it happens.” In June 2020, I interviewed Alice Wong for TVU before she lost her ability to speak. I asked her how she’d first learned of SARS-CoV-2. She began with the 2016 election of Trump:

Losing Alice feels like the ground shifting beneath us—I'm devastated—but to have known & shared even part of this life with her was an honor. She was one of the most fearless, generous & visionary disability activists. It’s impossible to measure how much she shifted the world—I feel it everywhere.

Respect Alice Wong’s call here:

I hope nondisabled people are listening to disabled people as we’ve discussed the mass hemorrhaging of accessible jobs, layoffs over accommodations and spike of tools used to screen out disabled employees in the past few years (which ends survival possibilities for us)

alice wong treated me as an equal from the moment she met me. i was a teenager with very little experience in the way of organizing; she was already a titan in this community. it didn't matter. she believed above all else that everyone, no matter how small, deserved to be treated as a future elder.

We’re not doing “disability accommodations are unnecessary and unfair actually” discourse less than 24 hours after Alice Wong has passed. Absolutely the fuck not, even if it is a perfect example of the kind of shit disabled people have to deal with and why Alice’s activism was and is so necessary.

We recorded this months ago, and I was going to wait to share it bc of everything, but I just realized I talk about Alice’s work as part of the discussion on why and how I created Art Description, because none of my work happens without the influence of her brilliance and generosity of knowledge.

this goes right along with my theory that the AI obsession in *users* is often bc…

1. they were never educated (esp "ipad generation") & don't know how computers work

2. our tools and services are all SO AWFUL NOW, degraded at best, actively user-hostile at worst

One of the great heartbreaks of being in the disability community is how often we lose people and how many of our most powerful voices have gone silent. We must live our lives loudly and joyously in their honor and remember that our very existence is resistance.
Oh no I just heard we lost Alice. This is terribly sad. She was an incredible, talented, powerful voice of the disability community. She stood strong for herself and for all of us. She will be missed immensely.
‘Death remains my intimate shadow partner. It has been with me since birth, always hovering close by. I understand one day we will finally waltz together into the ether. I hope when that time comes, I die with the satisfaction of a life well-lived, unapologetic, joyful, & full of love.’

Percy, or #DukeAmpersandKitten, tries to groom #inTerabang and gets so frustrated with her curly fur that eventually he just growls and bites her. She then looks up and him slowly and they stare - and then he goes back to trying to groom her. 😂
