Megan McArdle is proof that along with lack of talent & lack of opportunity that what holds many of us back in life is the capacity to feel embarrassment.
Boycotting Constitution Hall because the DAR won’t let Marian Anderson sing has costs. It may end opera. Is that worth it? By Megan McArdle, 1939

Gotta admit, I do sometimes get tired of folks I follow sharing and commenting on screenshot s of people I don't care to hear about anymore. Good example: Matt Iglesias. Going to mute his name, see if that helps.

Well, we got Trump’s Gaza “ceasefire,” you know, the one where the firing never ceased. Now I can hardly wait for the Ukraine “peace” plan.

Does anyone still give a rat’s ass what Bill Ackman has to say about anything (if they ever did)?

I see there’s a post about microplastics going around with a photo of drinking straws, so here is my semi-regular reminder that the 3 biggest sources of microplastics are tires (45%), synthetic clothing particles (35%) and paint (~10%).
Lay article attached:
One of the biggest microplastic pollution sources isn’t straws or grocery bags – it’s your tires
Every few years, the tires on your car wear thin and need to be replaced. But where does that lost tire material go? The answer, unfortunately, is often waterways, where the tiny microplastic particle...

Okay, I examined my biases here. What's your next point?

The last sentence is hilarious: "Please let me know how I can support you." For starters, maybe show up for one of the fucking screenings.
Here's the rest of Bari Weiss' memo. "We do not present the administration's argument for why it sent 252 Venezuelans to CECOT," and on Sec. Noem's trip "no comment from her or her staff about what her goal on that trip was... or if she had or has concerns about the treatment of detainees." LOL!

I don’t mean to sound extreme, but I don’t think we should have torture camps for people with criminal records either.

Well then. I am glad we at least agree that this is a desecration.
Rep. Russell Fry on Democrats criticizing Trump for illegally renaming the Kennedy Center: "I just find this incredibly rich coming from the party that spray paints monuments, desecrates memorials, tears down statues."

Just a voter here, in search of a political party that doesn't suck.
WELKER: Massie and Khanna say they are looking at options including impeachment and contempt for DOJ officials. Would you support those steps?

KAINE: I think that's premature

One cool dude (thread).
It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

We're gonna eventually expand to a 64-team college football playoff, and there'll still be dorks online claiming Sunny Valley State Technical Institute, 7-4 record on the season, didn't get a fair shake and the whole system is rigged.

I am saying this every chance I get: I am just a voter, in search of a party that doesn't suck. (Unfortunately, too many opportunities lately for saying it.)
A discharge petition to advance a policy ending congressional stock trading was finally moving forward when Hakeem Jeffries sucked the air out of it. By proposing his own bill that no Republican would sign, Jeffries effectively made consensus impossible. From @ddayen.bsky.social:
Jeffries Undercuts Congressional Stock Trading Ban - The American Prospect
A bipartisan solution was gaining momentum, but the House Democratic leader just issued his own bill that will prevent consensus.

Might get arrested as a terrorist for saying this nowadays, but I think I might just trust the Chinese more than the tech oligarch grifters in the US. They are simply evil.
The AI oligarchs are creating this “race” with China while giving them advance chips so that can catch up to make it somewhat of a race, which they can then use to justify their energy, resource and water-sucking data centers. It’s your patriotic duty to support it! Beat China!

Just one lonely voter here, in search of a political party that doesn't suck.
Who is surprised Trump's DOJ isn't releasing all of its Epstein files, despite Congress overwhelmingly passing a bill (+ Trump signing it) requiring this by today?

I agree with this, but also think it's fine for as many people as possible to wish him good fucking riddance.
I also think Dick Durbin is an idiot but people who don't live here seem to think there's a message that will get through to him and idk, he's retiring and also hates everyone

White men are 30% of the US and if they look around the room and see it’s less than 90% white men they think it’s affirmative action.
85% of CEOs are white men.

All but one US President has been a white man.

65% of all elected offices are held by white men.

Roughly 30% of the population is white men.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS TOPIC EVEN???
