But...

Those who think tornadoes are the predominant driver of annual US severe convective storm (SCS) losses are mistaken. In any given year, hail accounts for 50-80% of SCS insurance claims.

New update to IPUMS NHGIS! Users can now select "geographic extents" for any request of table data, including our time series tables, and for any geographic levels that nest within states. NHGIS will then produce data files limited to the areas in the selected extents. Learn more at: www.nhgis.org

Some really excellent context and thoughts on the index I shared yesterday. Thank you @sara-mctarnaghan.bsky.social !
WAPO ran a feature on resilience measurement using data from a proprietary provider. The tool allows invites users to see how their city/place stacks up to others across the US on risk and resilience. Some reactions as a researcher who has endeavored to measure resilience in place:

This is really interesting. Particularly how folks typically believe global warming is real and "someone should do something" but they don't see it impacting them personally now or in the future, nor talk about it much. Pretty big challenge to get folks to take action for themselves.

Analyzing both future risk AND resilience in one index is needed, but not common. I wish the methodology was public, but it's still interesting. wapo.st/3OkJysR
