In 2010, Aaron Swartz downloaded only 70 GBs of articles from JSTOR (0.0875% of Meta). Faced $1 million in fine and 35 years in jail. Took his own life in 2013.

USAID is one of the few unequivocally good things the US does.

You should see the attempt to close it as part of a DELIBERATE effort to isolate the US, cede the world stage to Russia and China, and create a more dangerous and unstable world.
I oversaw global health programs at @USAID.

They reached 100s of millions of people, added 6 extra years to the lifespan of children in partner countries, and were eradicating health threats worldwide.

What insanity and cruelty to break that.

Dems are still operating in a political paradigm where the public has a set of concerns, roughly reflecting the reality of life in America, and elections are about who addresses them better.

But that is not the political paradigm we’ve lived in, for a long time, and we’re getting further from it.

The lesson the American left should learn from the S. Korean protests is that racism enables American authoritarianism more than anything else.

The psychological wages of whiteness are a real currency white people of a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds are willing to be paid in.
So one of the reasons South Korea is a healthier democracy is that it’s a relatively homogeneous country and racism can’t be used as an effective tactic for attacking democracy. The psychological wages of whiteness in the US are a key reason authoritarian attacks on democracy in the US succeed
South Korea is an healthier democracy than some other powerful old democracies.

That actions have consequences, even for the most powerful, is truly the basis. The minimum for a democracy.

Décivilisation is actually the title of a book written by Renaud Camus, the French far-right author who invented the Great Replacement Theory.

Absolutely unconscionable.
The warning about "decivilization" didn't come after any one of a number of school shootings. It didn't come after January 6. It was after a health insurance company CEO's shooting wasn't received with national mourning:
