If a phone still works fine, it’s not “device hoarding” to keep using it. It’s common sense.

And now since I've been yammering on about my sci fi stuff for a bit, I do actually write other stuff! I'm just a wee bit obsessed with it right now, but most of my stuff is urban fantasy, as is the short story 'Speakeasy' I wrote for the Auckland Queer Writers Anthology, which will be coming out...

#NovemberWorldbuilders I've mentioned a couple already, but a bit more detail on them:

(1/7)
#NovemberWorldbuilders Does your fictional world have any wars in its history that are now over? What was the conflict about? What were the repercussions of it?
November 27, 2025 at 8:36 AM
#NovemberWorldbuilders Francis Morgan's parents, Huw and Saige Morgan, were both Naval officers aboard a third-rate Ship of the Line, the A.S.V. Arcanist, during the Garden War - the war that established the Garden Commonwealth I mentioned. They met during the final battle, the Battle of... (1/4)
#NovemberWorldbuilders Let's talk about how the world's history directly impacts your main character (or some other important character in the world you're developing). Do they have an important ancestor? Was there a specific event, say a war or diaspora, that impacted their current life?
November 27, 2025 at 8:25 AM
#NovemberWorldbuilders Now, you'd think I wouldn't answer this one, along with the others about lakes and rivers, because they're not a focus in my worldbuilding.

Except this one's about fishing. Remember that second planet in orbit of Teegarden's Star I mentioned? Babylon is mostly OCEAN! (1/3)
Alright, #NovemberWorldbuilders, this is the nichest of niche questions. If you have a notable lake/river in your world, how does it impact the economy? Do people fish from it? Are there any other resources they use? Maybe barges use it for transporting goods?
November 27, 2025 at 8:14 AM
#NovemberWorldbuilders Skipped a few since they're either not big for my worldbuilding or they'd outright reveal the entire plot lol

Francis' relationship with bodies of water would probably be almost nonexistent! She grew up on Mars, a waterless planet, and spent most of her life in space... (1/2)
Greetings, #NovemberWorldbuilders! Let's talk about your MC today. What is their relationship with water like? Do they know how to swim? Have they ever caught a fish? Or is it just something that gets in the way during their long journey? Maybe they've never *seen* a body of water so big
November 27, 2025 at 8:09 AM
#NovemberWorldbuilders I don't know if I'll stick with it, but while setting up my worldbuilding I found a lovely artist's impression of one of the planet candidates I'm using, which is very purply. Not sure how a real gas giant would be purple though.

Zeus, the only planet orbiting... (1/?)

#NovemberWorldbuilders Since Francis Morgan's story is so spread across a lot of worlds, most of which are uninhabitable, green is unique to a very small handful of habitable planets!

Most notable is one of the two habitable worlds of the Teegarden system, New Eden, which is the capital of... (1/4)
Hey there, #NovemberWorldbuilders!
It's COLORS week! Tell me about something in your world that's green. This one is probably more common, since green is so strongly associated with nature. Do you have any cool greenery in your world? Or maybe you've used it for an object? Tell me about it!
November 27, 2025 at 7:57 AM
#NovemberWorldbuilders in Francis Morgan's world, the trim and epaulettes on the uniforms of Lieutenant Commanders and above in the Acidalian Intersolar Colonial Navy is gold, and the hilts of their ceremonial swords are gold-plated, all with the obvious classism symbolism therein.
It's #NovemberWorldbuilders!
We're talking about colors in our worlds! Tell me about something in your world that's YELLOW or ORANGE? I find that these two are often underrated/underused in worldbuilding, so I'd love to hear what you have. Maybe something symbolic of the sun or made of gold?
November 27, 2025 at 7:50 AM
#NovemberWorldbuilders in the world of Francis Morgan, the flash of an arriving ship at warp speed is blue thanks to Doppler blueshift! The vessel is approaching at a relativistic speed, so the light of its warp distortion field appears blue even to the naked eye.

Now I think of it I could... (1/2)
Heya #NovemberWorldbuilders!
Continuing with COLORS! Tell me about something in your world that's BLUE. Do you use it symbolically? Do you have anything special in your worldbuilding that's blue? Maybe an important object symbolic of the sea or sky? Tell me about your blues!
November 27, 2025 at 7:46 AM
(came across one of the last ones, decided to go back)
#NovemberWorldbuilders I know this is probably more geared for the fantasy writers than sci fi, but in Francis Morgan's world, red is the colour of the Acidalian Colonial Union!

The Acidalian Colonial Union started as a self-governance... (1/5)

I was explaining this to someone else but, people who use AI Keep thinking it makes them "just as creative" as a real artist.

But they haven't even cultivated their IMAGINATIONS.

They don't even have the well of *ideas* to pull from

Even just THINKING CREATIVELY is a skill you need to develop

Something I was just reminded of which is emblematic of a problem with generative AI I haven't seen discussed much: those awful Skinny ads include one which has a scene in a sports changing room, and everyone there is dressed for American Football.

The ad is for a New Zealand company. Why is the...

really is incredible how often "men are having a problem, let's fix it using someone else's entire life" comes up. does the institute for family studies understand that children are whole complete human beings whose existence cannot be used as a coping mechanism for their fathers' anxieties? (no)

Centrist waffle doesn't appeal to people. Showing that you care about something, that you want to make people's lives better, that you will listen to them and use your position to do it, and unifying "minor" issues under a coherent story about your principles and goals REALLY APPEALS TO PEOPLE
