This week on ‘Whatever This Is’ we unpack why Danielle Smith is running Alberta like a cosplay authoritarian because she’s too weak to govern like a Premier.

We break down her fake “strongman” act, her panic over recall laws, and what Albertans can do to push back.

Will you look at how many polls in Matt Jeneroux's Edmonton riding went Liberal in the last election.
Closest Conservative win in the city; 5%. (narrower than Griesbach flipping from NDP, and South East, where mayor/ex-MP Sohi ran for Libs)

The lack of self-reflection in this op-ed by the board chair of the Better Edmonton Party says a lot about why the party lost the mayoral election. Even with a $2 million war chest and a big head start they couldn’t convince more than 30% of voters that Tim Cartmell should be Mayor of Edmonton.
Opinion: How the centre-right lost another Edmonton election
The business community — and those who believe in pragmatic, fiscally responsible government — need to grow up politically.

Edmonton has had a disturbingly high number of frostbite amputations the last two winters. With freezing temps on the way, both the City and the Government of Alberta must do more to prevent people from freezing in the cold. edmontonjournal.com/opinion/colu... #ableg #yegcc
Opinion: Edmonton doesn't have to be the frostbite capital of the world
Severe frostbite injuries are entirely preventable - together, let’s work towards a city where no one gets left out in the cold.

Not even hiding the blatant entitlement anymore.

The Premier's Office continues to remove all checks and balances on its power.

The courts, the legislature, the Auditor General, independent agencies, the federal government, voters and candidates they don't like...

This is getting ridiculous.

I really wish Canadians would stop focusing so much on American politics and instead look at how close Canada is to electing right-wing governments that will privatize the shit out of anything the first chance they can. We're horrendously close to losing things like affordable healthcare. #cdnpoli

At my local candidates' forum a couple of aspirant city councilors sniffed at Edmonton's "Vision Zero" strategy as an "ideological pet project". I was good and kept it to myself, but wanted to yell "What, people NOT DYING is a pet project?!"

This should be treated like the crisis that it clearly is.

If any other act of violence killed 3 people in 2 days in Calgary it would be front page news.

perfect example of the bias @drtaragoddard.com writes about.

Instead of discussing "stranger danger" with my kids I go on endlessly about cars
3rd person in 2 days killed by cars. Our hearts go out to their friends and family :(

The crime wave continues unabated... it's so disturbing that leaders are choosing to ignore this #yyccc #roadsafety www.ctvnews.ca/calgary/arti...

I briefly logged in to Edmonton mayoral candidate Tim Cartmell’s zoom town hall tonight. I logged out shortly after he talked about how bad his council colleagues have been to him for the past 4 years before he then started talking about how he’s really good at working as part of a team. 🙄

Big money in Edmonton’s mayoral race?

CityNews looks at disclosures and corporate donations. They show one candidate for mayor received significantly more money than others, including from corporate donors.

You've heard about the flat earther running for school board, but meet @hollyfortrustee.bsky.social, the competent, passionate and brilliant candidate I'm rooting for to win.

She's going to fight to ensure public dollars stay in the public system, and teachers have the supports they need.

Such a weird rhetoric that Edmonton is "falling behind", and that significant change in council is how we catch back up

We have made so many moves in the past 4 years to reduce our infrastructure debt, get transit to new area, modernize zoning and development

Like I don't get the mindset here

Bike lanes, well-lit crosswalks, and slower speeds are basically the same as airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control for cars. When it comes to cars, you can't sell them without these safety features in 2025. And yet.
