Our goal remains to get negotiated collective agreements that can be ratified by the membership. 45 Day Deadline Approaching On September 25, Joel Lightbound, the Minister Responsible for Canada Post, announced devastating cuts to postal services and good jobs which will harm communities and businesses, especially in rural, remote and Indigenous areas as well as seniors and persons with disabilities who make up over 40 percent of the population. The Minister gave Canada Post 45 days to come up with a plan to implement the cuts. That 45-day deadline is almost up. But we still haven’t had a full, public and transparent mandate review to hear from all stakeholders. How unsurprising that the Holocaust Encyclopedia doesn't agree with the UCP's persecution.

First they came for the communists, then the socialists, then the trade unionists, then the Jews, then me.

Socialist & Unionist NDP invoked this poem over the persecution of Union workers' collective rights.

November 6, 2025 Chantelle de Jonge, MLA for Chestermere-Strathmore, issued the following statement on NDP MLA Lori Sigurdson invoking the Holocaust and comparing United Conservatives to Nazis: “Yesterday in Question Period, NDP MLA for Edmonton-Riverview Lori Sigurdson invoked the Holocaust while criticizing Alberta’s use of the notwithstanding clause. It was an appalling and deeply offensive comparison. “During her remarks, Sigurdson referenced the poem First They Came, written by Pastor Martin Nieméller, reflecting on the Nazi regime's systemic persecution of Jews and other groups during the Holocaust. She went so far as to compare a provincial labour dispute to genocide, stating, “first they came for the teachers, and I did not speak out because I was not a teacher”. “This unhinged rhetoric is disgraceful and beneath the dignity of Alberta's Legislature. Invoking the Holocaust and comparing United Conservatives to Nazis to score desperate political points trivializes one of the darkest chapters in human history. Every member of the Assembly has a duty to speak with respect for the six million Jews and five million other victims including people with disabilities and those of different ethnicities and religions. It is abhorrent to exploit their suffering for partisan attacks. “There is a clear moral line that must never be crossed in politics, and yesterday the NDP crossed it. Alberta's Legislature should be a place for respectful debate, not reckless comparisons to crimes against humanity. “Albertans can hold differing views on the notwithstanding clause or any government decision. But there is no place for comparing policy debates to the Holocaust or the atrocities committed by the Nazis. “Naheed Nenshi needs to condemn these comments and ensure his caucus understands the deep gravity of what was said. The Holocaust is not a political talking point. Lori Sigurdson must apologize." -30- United States Holocaust Memorial Museum The quote that begins with the words “First they came for…” continues to be used today in popular culture and public discourse. It has often been adapted to reflect current social issues and debates across the world.

For those of you looking at starting recall petitions on Alberta MLAs who voted to strip Albertans of our Charter rights with the notwithstanding clause, I strongly implore you to also consider their votes and actions in relation to replacing AISH with ADAP. They are killing off our most vulnerable.

AHS Nursing Care members voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action. 98% of participating members voted ‘Yes’ to strike!

These unofficial results have yet to be certified by the Alberta Labour Relations Board. Earliest strike notice could be served is Nov 17, as per the Board’s recent ruling.

The UCP thought they could shut down debate, shut down democracy, instruct every member to keep silent and vote to ram through Bill 2 and strip 51,000 Albertans of their Charter rights, and that they could do this again as often as they please.

When Raj Uppal was elected president of CUPE Alberta in March the presser noted, "Uppal appears to be the first woman of color to lead a major union in Alberta."

A couple weeks ago, AUPE elected Sandra Azocar as president.

In months, the TWO largest unions in Alberta are now led by women of color!
