Tell me about an album you think must be listened to in its entirety, and what memories accompany it. Had flashback to Fields of the Nephilim’s Elizium. I interviewed Carl McCoy for a fanzine when I was 17 and asked whether it was true that they put flour on their shoulders onstage. Answer: no.

So far in 2025, I have met a very sweet dog, broken my personal record in bench press, and thought (yet again) about how the divide between ”genre” and ”literary” is bullshit. I’ve also decided to try to care more about social media. We’ll see how long that lasts.

STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING. This is the best short story I read in 2024, and soon it shall be yours.

Tamara Masri's "Inside the House of Wisdom" is brutal and devastating, as befits the subject matter, but the horrors are framed with so much hope and joy.

This is the eighth floor of the Al-Ahli Memorial Library, my favorite place in the building. When the elevator door opens, it’s like walking into a quiet circle of glass. So, as we walk, I’m going to ...

Hey, random reminder that it’s never too late to come out to yourself, loved ones or the world. I’m late GenX and grew up without language for being non-binary. No role models either. Came out at 43. It can take a little time. You’re not too old.

I barely know what day it is but someone mentioned “wizards” in Rings of Power and I immediately rattled off the names of the istari. Do i know what I did last week? No, but I know that the okapi can lick itself in the ear.

The What Magic Is This? podcast released an episode on Robert Anton Wilson. I had a flashback to when I worked in a bookshop in the late 90s and assisted him during a visit. I had read all his work and was a nervous wreck. He was very patient and kind, like an occult Santa.

A thing I have in common with Aleister Crowley: climbing. A thing I don’t: never got into a magical fight with William Butler Yeats.

Anyone who understands Swedish might want to check out Historiepodden podcast today - there’s a rundown of Swedes in the 17th century who were accused of having sexual congress with the fae. The loose translation is “illegal mingling”. It was punishable by death.

Btw turns out that this is a great place to catch Mesopotamian memes apparently. Send me everything. I’ve been interested since I wrote a high school essay about similarities between Inanna, Ishtar, Cybele, Isis and the Virgin Mary and the religion teacher temp told me I’d go to hell for blasphemy.

On the topic of writing in English as a second language, I harbor a special dislike for the word “the”. It’s cluttery. Sometimes I’m confused by all the “the”, like they’re ants scurrying around on the page. Would love to just tack definitethe articles onto endthe of words instead.

Once a great first line of a story appeared in my head. I wrote the story down from beginning to end. It was good, it was the story “Beatrice”. All other days, I sift through barely legible notes and wonder what I meant by “there’s an egg in a handbag!” or “humanity extras”.

Because you’ve been wondering whether arctic explorer Peter Freuchen (as he wrote in his memoir) actually fashioned a knife from his own frozen poop to hack his way out of a lavine: scientists have tested this, thoroughly, and could not duplicate the feat.

So I created this account a month ago and for some reason 500+ people are now following me. Look, I’m not great at bite-sized political commentary (I’m writing an angry book instead) or memes, and social media is a lot. But I think a lot about the outer reaches of reality. And mushrooms.

I live under a social media rock but will give this a try. Hi, I write stuff that is mostly labeled as weird fiction. Most of my works are available in English. I used to fence with longswords but then I took an arrow to the knee. I’m a middle-aged trans nuncle. Follow me for possible ramblings.
