I asked the two 13yos gaming in my living room right now how often you can launch a rocket to mars and they said "about every 2 years" without even looking up
BREAKING: “in my 24th year of my quest to settle the planet Mars, I have just been informed of a basic fact of celestial mechanics.”

I mean also why no backups full stop (a different question arguably unrelated to the specific situation).

sometimes writing a thing is: deleting a sentence, retyping it, changing two words in it, changing them back again, deleting the whole thing again, then putting it back in nearly the same words but in a different order.
sometimes.

ALSO I discovered that the word “mausoleum” comes from the name of the Persian satrap Mausolus for whom the Halikarnassos mausoleum was built!

Seen in the British Museum today: an Amazon chucking a rock at a Greek soldier (part of the Mausoleum at Halikarnassos, 353-351 BC); a cup that looks like a friendly gryphon (Apulia, 360-350 BC).

this is GREAT. (And very short, if you're short on time!)

I have an occasional newsletter if anyone wants to keep informed (other than on here) of writing things I am up to: julietkemp.com/newsletter/ (this information brought to you by virtue of the fact that I'm currently writing one to go out tomorrow)

Aim for February: start using my headphones again when I'm working. I know it's the single thing that helps most with getting distracted & yet I keep slipping out of the habit. Today: halfway success in that I had them on but forgot to put any actual music on 😆 Still helped!

Love novellas? How about two in one book? Wiz Duo Book 1 has wonderfully strange worlds created by David Gullen and Ben Wright.

Things I read this week: There Is No Antimemetics Division by qntm app.thestorygraph.com/books/107e6a...
Great, compelling, horror SF. I am not good at horror and skipped a few pages in the darkest part BUT it was absolutely worth reading and I'll be thinking about it for a while.

Yeah; the article does rather ignore the difference between a genuinely natural consequence (leave your coat off; do you get cold?) and an adult making a thing happen and calling it “natural” because it’s what they wanted to do. (A failure of distinction I have seen many times before tbh.)

Reminding you that you, too, can own an exclusive ebook on top of REALLY NICE dark Gothic books set in devastated Paris (which don't feature the Eiffel Tower at all, lol lol. I'm a local after all. But they do have Catholic lore & Vietnamese dragons)
Also applies to new UK orders (dec 2025 onwards)
Preorder campaign for the re-release of my Gothic Paris books -(March 10th!!!): pre-order any of the books in the series & get an EXCLUSIVE ebook with bonus shenanigans involving Fallen angels, a birthday party and a decidedly over-friendly magical fungus

The people who do the kanji website also have excellent (free) pages for katakana & hiragana which got me through way faster than Duo did.

I really really rate Wanikani for what it does. The textbook gives me a good idea of what the Duo sentences are doing, but going through it on my own means I‘m not getting feedback & tbh I am not sure how much is really sticking. A real class would doubtless be better but no time!
January 28, 2026 at 8:41 PM
so I am using:
Duo (good for hearing whole sentences, generally in the “better than nothing” bracket)

Wanikani (flashcard type kanji app, brilliant for kanji & some vocab but that’s all it does)

an actual textbook (good for grammar, good for vocab if I tried more, HARD to sit down to regularly)

… I am still reading up (= want to go everywhere!) so haven’t made actual decisions yet beyond Tokyo & Kyoto. I kind of want to go all the way NORTH but it would take a while so maybe not feasible.
(BTW, lmk if you‘d like info on the 3 diff varieties of Japanese-learning I’ve tried)
