“This is a serious story, about a serious time. It was Christmas, and the best Christmas present for the crew of the Nellie Martin was that they were leaving Pell and heading back towards civilisation, to where their families waited to welcome them at the docks of New Victoria. They had easy weather for the journey, a steady westerly to fill their sails, and nothing more to worry them than the bosun’s temper, and they were used to that. “Even under steam it’s a long journey from Pell to NV, a journey of weeks; in those days of course it was longer yet, a matter of months if the winds turned against you. Christmas would be come and gone long before they saw their loved ones. But no matter: their hearts were light, and they sang as they hauled on the mainsheet. Journeys are always shorter and quicker when you’re going home.”

Both well written, both queer, both (from v different angles) concerned with links between people & place.

We were left staring at something that was either a small bathyscaphe or an over-sized diving suit. Or, I came to realise, something with a little of the character of both. Adetokunbo was evidently proud of it, so I assumed it was his creation. Garnas and Shirin bore expressions of polite incomprehension. They didn’t want to be rude. I had a sudden, unpleasant suspicion. I hoped I was wrong. “I really hope you’re only planning to test it. You know no-one’s ever made it back. I mean no disrespect to your skills, but the others were also skilled.” His smile disappeared and was replaced by a grimace of pure determination. I wasn’t wrong. “This is a decision long in coming. I’ve been working towards this ever since I came to the tower. In fact, it’s the reason I came here. I would have followed through already, but I got a little side-tracked.”

Book extract reads: Fin was folding up the OS map. ‘You don’t think the police seriously think we’re involved? I mean, they’ve got absolutely no good reason.’ ‘No, but they’re desperate, and they can’t have any other leads to follow. Not if something they can’t even see is behind this. Until they find another suspect, they’ll be looking hard at us.’ That was what worried me. ‘They’ll be checking up on us today, I suppose.’ Fin thought for a moment. ‘They won’t get an answer at the flat with Blanche away in France, but a phone call from the police will tell Eleanor that something’s up. What do you think she will do?’ ‘The cops might settle for verifying we are who we say and leave it at that.’ I hoped so, anyway. ‘If they do contact Blithehurst, the first thing Eleanor will do is try ringing me. When she can’t get through, she’ll leave a message and wait for me to call her back. I don’t think she’ll start thinking something might be wrong until at least this time tomorrow.’ Even then, I didn’t think she’d drop everything and rush down here. She’d contact Blanche first. Eleanor knew Fin and I could take care of ourselves, and she had a business to run.

I cut across country rather than follow the road, partly for speed, and partly because there was a bit of a rise which would give me a decent overview of the road back into the city. I reined Monty in towards the top—not right on the top, to silhouette myself for anyone who might be looking—and eyeballed the situation. There was Arel, making decent time. And there, halfway between her and the city, mostly hidden in a clump of trees by the road, a group of people and horses. Who, sure, could be perfectly innocent travellers. But by ‘mostly hidden’, I meant mostly hidden even to me, looking with trained eyes from above. You’d never see them from the road.

What came next were the dragons. Not flying or fire-breathing, like in storybooks. Real dragons: huge musclebound lizards that can outrun a man. The threshers were bred in eastern lands for the purpose of killing. They appeared from a fleet of numerous ships, vessels smaller than our proud galleons, but lighter and swifter, and sitting low in the water with men at the oars and sails full of easterly winds. They drove ashore under fire from gun and cannon, yet so many were they, that they engulfed our beaches and coves, and killing as they spread, they spilled over every defence. I glimpsed their advance, saw the sun glinting from their blue-steel plate armour and their skin, scaled in rusty tones of orange and red. The reptiles were held on long chains, two to a man, wreaking chaos whenever they turned, and the dragon masters were big men, every one of them bulging with muscle.
