Ghosts linger amid the fields of England, waiting to be summoned by passing feet. As a walker faces the spectres of his own grief, he's drawn into a struggle between the paths connecting us & the boundaries that cut us apart, in Walking a Wounded Land.

it really is shocking how much self deprecation is seen as a cultural requirement for 'serious art.' 'real' artists are not allowed to exalt their work and must present it publicly as a sort of 'i dont think this is very good but maybe you will get around to it.' HECK THAT. love yourself

Personally, I think he should have kept the "Prince" & dropped the "Andrew", not the other way around. The last thing we need is criminal sleezeballs dragging a good name through the mud, whereas the institution of monarchy is already thoroughly grubby.

You know that thing where you forget how much you love a musician, then you put on one of their records & something in your chest soars with excitement?

Today, for me, Leonard Cohen...

Today's writing is... Oh, I don't know. It's been a distracting week, & after yesterday I don't trust my brain to stay on target. As long as today's writing put somes words on the screen, I'll be happy.

This reminds me of a coupla decades ago when the argument du jour was “What if Van Gogh had been medicated for his depression?!” with the implication that he wouldn’t have created art if he wasn’t miserable.

A) fuck that noise
B) Van Gogh didn’t own anybody his art OR his misery
this is why the whole “oh, suffering creates great art” thing is bullshit

you know what’s conducive to art? a roof over your head and food on the table

you know what isn’t? stressing out over where the fuck the rent money is going to come from
I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland.

And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.

Thought provoking and useful thread.
Thinking about the impact of LLMs on the way I earn a living - writing - and I wonder what the long-term impact will be.

On the one hand, LLMs do not seem capable of producing *good* writing, in the sense of original, engaging writing (they can manage clarity, though). But they can do *quantity.*
