Ghosts linger amid the fields of England, waiting to be summoned by passing feet. As a walker faces the spectres of his own grief, he's drawn into a struggle between the paths connecting us & the boundaries that cut us apart, in Walking a Wounded Land.

In case you, like me, had completely missed this...
If you, like me, realised that you can't find a link to @easterconuk.bsky.social's PlanZ where they're collecting participation requests (dealine tomorrow!), the only way I've found so far to get to the site is to go back to the email we got sent on Feb 6th and ask to reset your password again.

My new novella has been out a couple of weeks, & it's started getting some nice reviews, so maybe you'd like to go read it? There's scientific research, high stakes action, & weird disfunctional people coping with a planet that wants to kill them. What more could you want?
My new novella, All That Is In The Earth, is out from @lunapress.bsky.social in less than a month! A quarantined planet, an incurable disease, & a band of survivors in a desperate race against infection, flesh-eating monsters, & each other. Plus bonus soil science!

one of the problems with budgeting services is that the most cost-effective way to run services is to budget a little bit too much (but not too *much* too much)

Silently cursing myself for putting "update LinkedIn profile" on my to-do list. Surely, there has never been a more cursed task.

This.

Brewdog is your classic failed "first-mover."

They entered the market, at scale, when that market (something slightly better/edgier in mainstream shops and bars) was wide open.

Their offering was above-average and sometimes great (e.g. their non-alcs). But they made the classic mistake /1
I think Keith’s spot on here. People want Brewdog’s beers to be bad for moral reasons, but while they’re not as exciting as they were, they’re still fine (though taste is subjective and clearly if you despise the brewers that will affect your enjoyment). As I said yesterday, I hope a buyer is found.

Today's writing is a little bit of business writing, then putting my current characters through a firefight. These are people whose main skills are handling mops & removing stubborn stains, so it's pretty mean of me to do this to them.

Just finished before my lunch today. Two quite different but enjoyable stories.
One of which makes me wonder if a future world all now celebrates Halloween on the last Friday of October thanks to Killie's prominence.
Love novellas? How about two in one book? In Wiz Duo 2, Juliet Kemp sends a reluctant knight on a quest, while E M Faulds gives her heroine a superpower that totally sucks.

Have just bounced off a new podcast 15 seconds in. So now’s a good time for three reminders:

You aren’t going to like everything and that’s fine

Don’t interact with stuff you don’t like

You not liking it doesn’t mean it’s bad or a personal attack.

What are the decent alternatives to Microsoft Office these days? I need something that can deal with Word docs and spreadsheets, & ideally an Outlook substitute. Doesn't need a lot of advanced functions, but does need to be usable by someone with pretty basic IT skills.

Ten years ago this was how Transformers fans asked their long-distance crush if they’d officially be their romantic partner.

Though this method was specific to one particular fan and had not been replicated by anyone else since.

I feel like this is pointing at some of the same issues as the anti-LLM conversations - whether it's parenting or craftsmanship, caring is the truly human thing, it's what we need to grow & to thrive. Labour & relationships rooted in forms of intimacy, not hierarchical rules or black box code.
How has science fiction cinema and tv presented parenting? This essay from Koneru Hanmantharao explores a wide range of examples - human and machine parents; clones and aliens and chosen family...
