yesterday was actually a DREAM — got to visit the smithsonian’s bird collection to work on IDs for a few bird bones from Monticello. everyone there was incredibly generous, in spite of the looming government shutdown

have been a bit ill for the last two weeks & had to take some forced r&r, which resulted in me finally playing Pentiment! i’m a bit late to the game, but SO enamored with the art style and narrative. would recommend to all fans of the reformation + illuminated manuscripts

one week into my semester! excited for what looks to be a few months full of delightful readings, many more hours sifting through animal bones, and the occasional ceramics class (featuring my very much so in-progress hammerhead shark)

i am about to start the second year of my phd, which is such a crazy thing to be able to say. my first year was extremely difficult for me (particularly adapting to a new city + returning to academia after a hiatus), but i’m very hopeful & excited for this semester!

Black History Month. ❤️🖤💚 For those who don't know me, I'm that democracy reform activist who does some quilting on the side. Don't let anyone tell you quilters aren't political. Being a science writer right now is like…

9am - Coffee and constitutional crisis!
10am - Read a neat study on 5000-year-old beads.
11am - US science funding is off/on/off/on!
Noon - Email a researcher about Iron Age skeletons.
Afternoon - More constitutional crises and screaming into the void!

i have written about this before but i have become extremely civic republican virtue pilled as a result of all of this. democracy will not work without an active effort to cultivate virtue among ordinary people!
trump is unique in that his depravity creates the very cynicism he feeds on. it is necessary to uphold the idea that we are capable of better even if that belief is counterfactual. which is why we need to tell the bureaucracy that their work is valued and that they are holding the line for us.
Taking the President's symbolic roles as essentially being the central rituals of American civic religion, Trump's inability to perform them- to actually be presidential- signals that the civic religion is hollow and without power, that there are no consequences for blaspheming it.

ME: *writing in my journal with the sole aim of pissing off future historians and archaeologists* I returned to my home - which is built in the usual style - by the normal way, and prepared and ate dinner in the way I often but not always do

happy to report that i endured my first semester of my phd program!! i didn’t expect to be absolutely levelled by it—took me a few weeks to start feeling vaguely human-shaped again. hoping to share a bit of a write-up on my experience in the coming days

Sotomayor scoffs at suggestion that democratic process will protect trans people: "When you’re 1% of the population or less, it's very hard to see how the democratic process will protect you."

Adds: There are many more Black people/women, & the dem process "didn't protect them for whole centuries"

Solidarity with all trans brothers and sisters today. That your future is yours is cold comfort when the state has you targeted but for whatever it’s worth we stand with you
the reason they are going to ban care for trans kids is because they want to kill trans kids. that is not a bug it is a feature

Monthly reminder: Many people have a book in them, but it takes a special kind of freak to leave the Land of Laziness, cross the Plains of Procrastination and Insecurity Mountain, find the Blade of No One Made You Do This, and use it to cut your chest open and yank that book out.
