I think the bulk my efforts learning to draw were bic mechanical pencils and spiral notebooks. I didn't start using nice supplies for like, years. This isnt even work I ever showed anyone and I doubt I'm alone in that. You can also do some beautiful work with bic pens with enough practice.

Clarification: Accepting payments for commissions through Friends & Family is against TOS (which you agree to by making an account), and it is TAX FRAUD.
Do not ask for comm payments via F & F. Dont let an artist convince you to pay this way, because your account can be taken down as well.
