I enjoyed reading this exploration of the arguments against romance fiction, since it does identify a real gap in the models romance offers for happiness. I admit that, even when it offers alternatives to romantic love e.g. www.vivanco.me.uk/faith-love-h... it emphasises happiness via community.

Really good investigative piece on the absurdity of the fad of pushing AI into education. We have a non-violent John Brown, teacherless schools, and, of course, billionaires trying to profit from enshitfication.

My hottest take:

I do not think that fictional characters should have human rights. There is, in fact, no limit to what should be allowed to happen to them, on account of them being not real and imaginary.

Citation is feminist memory.
The whole point of citations beyond "showing your work" is so it's clear where your evidence is coming from. I'll be the last person to be a stickler about the specifics of a given style other than my deep and abiding hatred for APA but citations matter! They matter so much!

What if we thought of journalism as community service?

@terryparrisjr.bsky.social is doing exactly that with his project to set up journalism practices in local libraries. This is exactly the experimentation we need to increase civic information and public accountability.
My @jskstanford.bsky.social year at Stanford centers on one question: What grows when you build a community newsroom inside a public library? I've been testing it in Brooklyn neighborhood. It's works.

We can do this in the 16,000+ library buildings in the U.S. Seriously.
