Hi new (apparently mostly Colorado) people! I am a librarian/archivist at a private university here, I am from Kansas (6 gens back on my mom's side), and I am an abolitionist, believer in harm reduction, and the need to protect public goods and services, including but not limited to libraries.

The autobiography concludes its section on this conversation interestingly:

"I [Harry Belafonte] felt as if our moorings were unhinging. "Damn, Martin! If that's what you think, what would you have us do?" I asked.
He gave me a look. "I guess we're just going to have to become firemen.""

“But what deeply troubles me now is that for all the steps we've taken toward integration, I've come to believe that we are integrating into a burning house."

Dr. King said this famous quote on March 27th, 1968, mere days before his murder. But the context around the quote is interesting...

Is this the closest Bluesky has come to that travelling stripper who wrote that enormous Twitter thread which became an actual movie? Possibly. www.elle.com/culture/movi...

Founded in 1986, Welton Street Cafe became a symbol of Five Points' roots as the historically Black neighborhood grew taller, more gentrified and more expensive and other legacy businesses moved out.

New — I wrote about ChongLy Scott Thao, the elderly Hmong American wrongly arrested and forced out of his home by ICE in his underwear during the punishing Minnesota winter, what witnesses saw, and DHS's racist claim that he fit the description of another Asian man they were looking for.

My story:
Behind the disturbing image of ICE snatching a half-naked, elderly Hmong American from his home
DHS has claimed without evidence that they were looking for someone else when they took ChongLy Scott Thao.

i think this MLK day the thing to focus on is the strategic focus and tactical brilliance of the civil rights movement and the way it was laser focused on a set of achievable goals

There are a few things I Iearned about Minnesotans while partnered with someone from Duluth (somehow even colder than the Twin Cities bc of lake effect) it is that they have winter clothing for every situation and some of them willingly eat fish cured in lye. I would not mess with them.

ICE ended up returning the man, Saly, after realizing he’s a fucking US citizen with no criminal record, per his sister-in-law. These fucking animals.

It's real dumb that using the word "demon" in reference to a statue with a nickname that references Satan will get you blocked by a fan account for that statue
then it probably shouldn't be using a nickname that references the most famous demon in Christian eschatology? 🤷‍♀️

I don't have a dog in this fight but it's worth noting that the demon horse statue that greets you at the airport in Denver is nicknamed Blucifer in part because of his glowing red eyes and in part because it fell on its creator and killed him.

Still waiting on an explanation as to why 116 of our staff positions - our incomes, our livelihoods - at the National Endowment for the Humanities were "abolished" when the funding for the agency will remain level. #NEH
National Humanities Alliance reports budget bills expected to be signed by Trump will include level funding for NEH, and continued, but cut, funding for NARA and NHPRC. Wilson Center gets funding - 5m down from 15m in FY25. Check link for more on different funding levels:
