My husband thinks he hates musicals but he knows every word to Muppet Christmas Carol and sings along happily and was excited to put it on tonight so I think the problem is that he saw the greatest musical of all time and now he thinks all of them should be this good

a French peasant to his hungry family, 200 years ago:

"the chicken livers were free, no one wanted them. so I boiled them and some onion scraps until it was a paste. I'm calling it 'paté'. now stop crying and eat your dinner."

Rob Reiner: I'm going to make a coming of age drama, a fantasy adventure story, a romantic comedy, a psychological horror and then a courtroom drama.

Us: Across your entire career?

Reiner: In a 6 year period.

Us: That sounds-

Reiner: -Each one will be arguably the best movie in that genre.

We play the lottery in that we look at the jackpot when we pass gas stations and debate buying a ticket

We win if we don't buy and it increases
We lose if we buy

We win a lot more than we lose

i believe people when they say linux has gotten better in the last few years. what i'm skeptical of is that linux Guys have improved. i will not use an OS where i'm at high risk of someone calling me stupid for not liking some aspect of the experience. i must be allowed to hate the computer

The thing that gets me about this is the $25/hr job at the post office isn't funded by that small town, it's coming from all those city folks
Also: just "get a job"

My guide to data visualization, which includes a very long table of contents, tons of charts, and more.

--> Why data visualization matters and how to make charts more effective, clear, transparent, and sometimes, beautiful.

"If you consider that a sandwich then yeah I guess."
"Well I don't."

I just had to use one authenticator app to sign into email to get a code for a second authenticator app that was required in order to prompt a third authenticator app to log into an account.

I think we might be doing too much here.

I like this approach, with the additional caveat that there are degrees to it. Most people I've seen are using the synthetic text as a supplement rather than wholesale copy/paste and applying at least some degree of their own thinking (though imo not enough as evidenced by the usage levels).
this is similar to what I've come to think of as the "reverse turing test"

when people find synthetic text is "good enough" to complete a task (homework, business report, email) it doesn't mean the machine is smart. it means they were asked to produce something that didn't matter

it's diagnostic
So similarly, when we see people who prefer ChatGPT or a similar synthetic text extruding machine as a source of medical information, that means those are people who are under-served in the current system.

Holy CRAP.

Retired engineer takes random pics of *kids*, without consent or attribution, bins them into “autistic” or “not autistic”, and uploads that “data” for free on Kaggle.

Well over a HUNDRED papers are published, 38 in Springer Nature, 25 in IEEE, using it.

And no reviewers objected? WTF.🧪
Springer Nature retracts, removes nearly 40 publications
The dataset contains images of children’s faces downloaded from websites about autism, which sparked concerns at Springer Nature about consent and reliability.
