I wish people in the democracies were all well-read and thoughtful, but they're not. Pushing aside some issues to try to win on others is ugly, but it's a time-honored strategy.

There’s unfortunately a lot of people who don’t understand that you’re talking about campaign strategy v. actual governing policy. The thing republicans do is campaign really well and then get in office and just start passing policy regardless of whether it aligns with their campaign platforms.

In a way, I find the authoritarian takeover of our media system even more disturbing than the authoritarian takeover of our political system.
Our political system has been failing basically my entire adult life. But, the media system provided accountability and sort of worked. Now it’s collapsing.

Instead of asking the Speaker of the House if he has a view on <critical separation-of-powers QOTD>, maybe reporters should start asking him if he reads any newspapers or otherwise informs himself on those matters to which we might think the Speaker of the House ought to be paying attention?
