A Jack Russell terrier in the shape of a woman, known for insatiable curiosity and sensible shoes.
This reminds me of the term coined to describe what happens to your finances as someone with a serious illness or as a caregiver—“financial toxicity.”
Great new-to-me word: Precariat. The segment of the population experiencing financial precarity.

Which is practically everyone most of us will ever meet. A $400k/yr household can't save their way to true safety against medical and tort liability.
I feel like the term of art here I rarely see used is Precariat

I have bought a ton of little low tech things over the course of the last couple years and I have made a few purchases that were very small but life changing for a middle aged lady:

-hand fans
-cotton hankies
-cheapass reading glasses
-decent pens (you pen nerds were totally right about pens)

I once knew a Federal bank examiner, and one time someone asked him why we had to KEEP inspecting banks over and over. He basically said every new batch of business school grads invents bank fraud from first principles.

The underlying cause of every bubble - debt masquerading as financial innovation - depends on not just short financial memory & speculative neophytism, but reinventing jargon of finance, like how each generation of kids has new ways to say same things.

This classification will make it impossible for students to access federally-backed loans for their studies. Of note: most of these disciplines are pursued by women. This is an attempt to keep women out of the workforce. ALSO, many of these jobs require mandatory reporting of child abuse. Weird, no?

I used to work at a suburban newspaper. Every week there were school superintendents exposed as embezzlers, police captains racking up DUIs, county officials doing favors for relatives' businesses. All that is less visible now, and the absence of shame leads to normalization.
one of the underrated factors for the rise in scamming across U.S. society is the death of local media.
It gets lost in the shuffle, but the Speaker of the House is someone who, by all rights, should’ve had his career ended a decade ago by a Shreveport TV news investigative team.

Remember that Intuit (the owner of Turbotax) lobbied extensively to kill Direct File, which did tax filing for free and somehow managed to make a good and intuitive user experience without AI.
TurboTax is about to be integrated into ChatGPT, where customers will be guided through tasks tied to their tax filings or financial profile by the AI chatbot.

TurboTax owner Intuit is also paying OpenAI more than $100 million a year to power AI agents.
