all pies are good. simply do not say to me that any pies are bad. i do not even want to know about the kind of life that would so warp a person as to think any pie is bad

Thoughts about this Chicago Bears game.

First, Caleb needs to work on the t-shirt under the jersey game.

Second, what are these first down things? I am intrigued.

Third, holy shit, we scored on an opening drive against a good defense?

It's true. The public has how universities work, or why the federal budget cuts are an existential crisis, or anything else about how the assault on 🇺🇸 higher ed will affect society. Because our university leaders have been from the public square:

bsky.app/profile/mcop...
99% of the population doesn’t know what a Board of Trustees is. They think universities are run by the faculty. Which is like thinking line cooks at McDonald’s are making corporate decisions.
Boards of Trustees ***LIKE*** the Trump demands. They ***AGREE*** with them.

They like the idea of putting the screws on activist, lefty, and Muslim students. They like the idea of a whiter student body and conservative curriculum. They want these things and think $200 million is a fair price.

I'm sure I'll take shit for saying this, but this passage from Glenn Loury's Chronicle interview perfectly captures for me the civilizational necessity of a relatively autonomous academic sphere. www.chronicle.com/article/the-...

Why not make tariffs against China 1 million percent at this point? What’s the difference, really?

Felix sat through the band’s entire new album, and a few of the radio hits, impatient for them to play the old school stuff. Then he heard the familiar bass line start, feeling the rumble deep down in his belly. Finally, it was time to get into the mosh pit and fuck some shit up.

Newsletter: There is no AI Revolution. Consumer adoption of generative AI outside of ChatGPT is barely 100 million people, every single company in generative AI is deeply unprofitable, Microsoft is pulling capex, and OpenAI spent $9bn in 2024 to lose $5bn.

1000% this. Public libraries are actually pretty radical--free to all, and based on the idea that info should be available to all. Get a library card! Use your library! Those numbers often play into their funding.
I also keep thinking that we have to support our libraries.

The same applies for “data-driven decisions.” Only valued when the data supports corporate/institutional interests.
I fear there is deep truth here.

I spent the last week praising the Steelers. I apologize to Steeler Nation for jinxing them. I’ll go back to hoping my Bears don’t lose to the Vikings by 70.
