In Marx's analysis this is part of the process of primitive accumulation, where people are driven off the land and into capitalist wage labor. It's so obvious seeing it play out in today's world, with entire populations being herded into cities where they serve to keep wages low and labor plentiful.

I don't know if it's ever coming, but I love that there are no blue checkmarks here. It's evolved far from its original use of verification and perhaps paying for the mark democratized that access, but now it just creates an unnecessary hierarchy of perceived authority, prestige, and status.

I’m not a fan of this uptick in retooling fanfiction for publishing. Fanfic relies on an IP foundation and exists in conversation with other fics and readers. Stripped of that, what’s often left are hollow worlds and characters that lack the depth to fully interact with their settings.
