Very glad I cancelled my massage in town today, so many pictures of pretty bad flooding in town and the areas around it. Hope everyone got home safely.

Amazing dinner of half a very tasty Japanese wagyu steak each with cauliflower cheese, and green beans. Washed down with sparkling rhubarb mead (for me, red wine for Pete). Followed by sweet, delicious pink pomelo for dessert. My belly is so happy! 😁

Cancelled my massage as we're in an amber weather warning and frankly, given how the roads from us into town were blocked on Wednesday, we didn't want to risk it on a day when far more rain is forecast.

Bit of a shame as I've had several proto-migraines this week.

Writers, am curious:

My tendency is to use "X means that the..." or "Y means that it's..."
Whereas I notice that many people drop the word "that" from both of these phrases: "X means the..." or "Y means it's..."
I can see that they work without the "that" but I still veer towards including it.
Why?

We are a social species, and we have always prevailed through cooperation. Caring for our sick. Raising children we didn't sire or birth because they were part of our village or extended family. We are not breeders and predators, we are communicators and survivors. We evolved to UNITE.

I am tired of scrolling through YouTube shorts and seeing beefy conspiratorial clowns declare cooked food and vaccines and the very presence of a foreign person to be anathema to their delusional vision of a perfect, homogenous, walled-off society.

We did not evolve to be ALPHA CHADS, actually.

Well that explains why nobody moved into the Roman cities after they left. If people were setting fires this extensive, you would stay well away

(I am not a historian, this is conjecture. People have probably written about this, but it's late and I am not looking it up now)

Queen Boudica revenge was so great against Rome she burned Londinium leaving a scorch layer still runs under modern London, named by archaeologists the 'Boudican Destruction Horizon'

Years of restricted trade, limited control over imports, and stunted development have made Palestinians in Gaza deeply reliant on humanitarian aid. This dependence has allowed the basic necessities—access to food, water, fuel, medicine—to be weaponised. cil.nus.edu.sg/blogs/the-la...

Watching Labour MPs take a wrecking ball to nature makes me so angry & so sad. Their action tonight voting down amendments to the #PlanningBill intended to protect wildlife & habitats from destruction is so reckless & so counterproductive. People didn’t vote Labour for this 👇

Watching reels and TIL that Rosemary Clooney who was one of the leads in a longtime favourite film of mine (White Christmas, 1954) is the aunt of George Clooney. Despite not having heard of the name apart from these two, that they were close relatives never occured to me!!!!!

A2: I'll always try pickles and fermented foods when travelling. Had some great pickles (many countries) and kimchi (S Korea) of all kinds but will also be happy if I never ingest fermented shark (Iceland) ever again! 1/2

A1: I love pickles (especially ones with sweet and sour), and I love kimchi but never been able to get on with sauerkraut. I'm a super taster (sounds great, is a monumental PITA) which means I'm overly sensitive to bitter (and that bleeds a little into sour) so am a bit picky!

If you're not adding ALT TEXT to your images, please consider doing so. You can turn on a setting in bsky that prompts you to do so, if you're worried you'll forget.

I know I'm not alone in preferring not to share visual content that doesn't have ALT TEXT applied!

Me, as a therapist: Have you applied any cheese to the issue?
Me, as a therapist: Have you tried buying some Japanese kitchen knives about it?
Me, as a therapist: Could we just sit in silence for a bit, I'm slightly overwhelmed and need to have a word with myself.

You will never go broke pretending to fight the power while going to the powerful set's cocktail parties & fluffing their egos a lot. There's a whole subcategory of "journalism" that consists of telling the very rich what they want to hear. (Irony! The rich don't actually respect those who do this.)

London food friends: A friend of mine has asked for suggestions / recommendations for a restaurant in central London for a pre-Xmas get together of friends. 4 people. Prob late November. Perhaps something xmassy but doesn't have to be. She was leaning towards European and/ or Gastropub. Mid budget.

Such a bizarre claim from mainland China to lay claims to Taiwan, an island with at least 15 indigenous nations/tribes, and an island that China had as a colony for 200 years from late 17th century, and they have nothing to do since late 19th.
doesn't make sense.
