'Lost Manhattan Spruce', 2023, acrylic on 16x24-inch canvas.

In memoriam of a fave tree that broke during the Oct 2019 snow storm/windstorm. #ArtAdventCalendar
This is a vertical acrylic painting of a few small houses on an urban street at sunset. They are overshadowed by the large Y-shaped spruce painted further back down the road, on the right side of the canvas. Each house is only one story, with meagre concrete steps out front. The first and closest has siding that is tinged pink in sunset. The second house has brick red shingles and metal awnings over its windows in sepia, and an empty half barrel dark inside. The third house is under the bottom eaves of the large tree, and has a set of stairs and a wheelchair lift in white, though orange glow in sunlight and pale blue in shadow. The spruce itself is painted in chunky strokes that follow the uplifting branches of the spruce, and halfway up it splits into two apical meristems and crowns. On the left and rising high against a light blue and scant cloud sky, is a silvery street light, arching over the houses. The road on the right is empty, and has some of the golden orange too.

Day 7 #artAdventCalendar my #linocut horseshoe crab (Tachypeus gigas) in grey, blue-bronze and dark brown on 8” x 8” cream-coloured Japanese paper with bark inclusions. 🧪🐡 They get their name from their horseshoe like shape but they are not crabs; they are chelicerates, more closely related to 🧵
My linocut horseshoe crab is hand printed on 8” x 8” cream coloured Japanese paper speckled with some tiny brown bark inclusions. The crab is viewed from above and its body is printed with a base of grey, with some darker gold-green especially around the edges to give the impression it is a bit domed and then texture, edges, hairs around the edge of the horseshoe shape and the tail are printed in dark brown.

I love leaves, particularly as they change colours. This one was the first of many variations that I continue to paint. I have taken pictures all over Canada, Europe and the UK and will continue to paint based on these. Look down!

A hasty fistful of coloured pencils and markers packed for a camping trip created this little sketch of Astotin Lake, Elk Island National Park.
