there’s an interesting thing we’ve done in our social circle as a result of Covid which is: now we let people know before social activities if anyone has any symptoms of anything potentially contagious, so everyone can make their own risk assessment

Oh, man. So saddening 💔

Alice was a wonderful disability activist and writer.

I was always moved that deliberately included those of us w/ post-infectious illnesses.

As we say in Greek, may her memory be eternal 💙🕯️
This is so devastating to hear. Alice was a legend—an incredible writer and a fierce advocate. Here is some of the work she did for the Disability Visibility Project. As @helenrottier.bsky.social said, she will be missed by many

Rest in peace, Alice Wong. A great light in disability justice has gone out.
“One of the things that really gives me joy is the fact that there are so many amazing, brilliant, creative disabled people out there. But part of my rage — and it’s a very real rage — is that most people don’t really know about them.”

I've looked at all the details of this deal to end the shutdown reached by a small group of Senate Democrats. I've talked to a number of friends on the Hill to see if there's anything I'm missing. Sadly, I am not.

This is a shit deal. It's a betrayal. It's cowardice.

The response to Zohran Mamdani's campaign reminds me of the stories I've heard from ambitious, optimistic Millennials (esp. BIPOC) whose ideas are repeatedly shot down by managers, are told they don't have enough experience to be leaders, and are constantly subjected to microaggressions and racism.

No matter how hard people try to convince us having empathy is wrong,

it is right.

No matter how hard people try to convince us that diversity is a weakness,

it is a strength.

No matter how hard people try to convince us that love is limited,

it is unlimited.

Obligatory I follow royal news because I find it fascinating from a historical-anthropological lens.

Yup.
the symbolism of “Trump destroying the White House for a overpriced luxury vanity project, during a government shut down, days after a historically-large mass demonstration against his regime called “No Kings”’ would be rightly viewed as laying it on a little thick if it was in a work of fiction

there is a certain irony around tech bros who believe that the work of writers is largely worthless, while also claiming at the same time that they desperately need to use that written work - without compensating human authors - so they can make a bazillion dollars off LLM products.
I've spent my entire life being told that everything I do is useless, mocked and being told no one should be paid for "underwater basket weaving," and now they're like, "I must steal all the underwater basket weaving lore because it's imperative for my survival"

it doesn’t, like. fix the Supreme Court. but it fixes me a little each time and that’s also important

Too many books? No - not enough bookshelves!
I attended a book swap, and I left with more books than I brought.

This is not a problem in regards to this specific event (lots of books left over, and apparently the series I zeroed in on had survived multiple swaps with no takers).

It is, however, a problem for my bookshelves.
