I think it would be cool to merge retirement homes, children’s homes, and animal shelters. A community where older people teach young children about life and take care of abandoned animals together. I bet it would do wonders for everyone involved.

@jay.bsky.team please reinstate Evan Greer and consider firing your head of moderation.

Moderation at scale is difficult, particularly when the head of @moderation.bsky.app acts like a bigoted hater of trans people and Palestinians.
@moderation.bsky.app suspended our director, Evan Greer's Bluesky account for speaking out about an awful experience from a transphobic bigot...is @bsky.app on the way to becoming the next Twitter/X ?

Re-skeet + demand Bluesky unsuspend her account!

New study finds that using ChatGPT to write essays led to reduced brain activity & memory compared to writing without tools or using a search engine. While ChatGPT made writing easier, it also caused cognitive offloading, weakening learning and engagement over time.

this is not meant as a hot take or a unique insight but it's remarkable how a lot of scientific discourse is about methods, data, and findings, whereas what really does most of the heavy lifting happens to be the assumptions

Part of the populist project of undermining expertise is to convince "regular" people that the research done by highly trained scientists is the same as the research they can do by following recommended YouTube videos down into a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories and snake oil pitches.

fundamentally, "just go back" is never an adequate response to this kind of constitutional crisis. it just doesn't work. and that's why, among other things, any project of American Reconstruction *must* involve the revitalization of Congress as an active force

Just a reminder: having a functional moral compass right now is going to make you feel bad all the time; don’t mistakenly hate yourself for that.

the fact that plutocrats and the Nazis are allied renders donor-dependent organizations particularly likely to cave to unlawful state coercion, alas.

financing public goods via philanthropy means we’ve been governed substantially by plutocrats for a while.
Email from Columbia President Armstrong makes clear that admin still has no idea what it’s dealing with. No amount of “serious action to combat antisemitism” (read: punish Palestine activists) will satisfy the Nazis. They see universities as an enemy institution to crush underfoot.

Today sitting in the knowledge that racism’s power is in its theft of time & spirit. Onwards. Thanks to all those who called Hochul’s office yesterday, please continue to do so (518) 474-8390.

Together let’s insist on a world we want to live in.
A new McCarthy era is upon us. Stupid, depressing, and dangerous as ever. I wonder whose name will carry the dunce cap in the history books. Too many are complicit. I’ll need to find upset and action, but for now I’m feeling grief at the dehumanization inherent to all this.

ten years ago telling most people we would end up like this would get you locked up in an nuthouse. all of this makes me less convinced about the ability to project out political outcomes, especially ones that feel immutable in a moment we can't see past

Old enough to remember when the same country re-elected W after all the claims of “this is not who we are”
Reading folks talk about the “erosion of democracy” in America like it’s not the same country that did genocide, enslavement, segregation etc… like I get what you’re saying about the moment but can we think about the words we’re using and who we dehumanize in the hysteria?

This is the group that posted 100s of hateful messages under a book award I got, not bc they knew my politics, but bc of my Arab face. The reporter who wrote about it then told a good-people-on-both-sides story. Glad they’re exposed for the hate group that they are
