Super excited to present at #TSRCONF at @stanfordcyber.bsky.social this Thursday!
My poster, Weathering Trust: Credibility Formation in YouTube’s Weather Info Ecosystem, explores how “weather influencers” have become critical—yet largely unregulated—sources of safety information. Come say hi!! 🌪️⛈️

A straggler thought after yesterday's #NWAS25 digital-first sessions and this morning's #helene content: post-disaster misinfo is out of control. we have elected reps actively theorizing weather-control machines (wouldn't that be nice?). Question is: How do we push back? Esp. online?

Like I said, September is *busy* but I am VERY excited to attend #NWAS25 (remotely) this upcoming week. Looking forward to the digital meteorology panel tomorrow as this topic is pretty squarely my dissertation project (from an HCI, influencer, and platform policy angle). 🌦️🌪️☔ Fuck yeah, weather!

September is starting off crazy busy/chaotic. But not as chaotic as #SpiderJesus💥 Today at 1:30PT/4:30ET I'm presenting (remotely) a preliminary work on #AIJesusSlop at #4S2025. Dive deep into observer theories and how this slop is so much more than #spam. See ya there! 🙏

Fantastic read. "There's no social media equivalent of a WEA alert that's sent out to all mobile phones within radius."
i been saying this about how it's really bad that local communities have outsourced communications to Meta/Facebook and Twitter:

I'm not a meteorologist, I'm a social scientist (studying #wx comms). A few things can be simultaneously true re: #tx #floods:
- trump admin should have never defunded NOAA, but
- NWS was staffed & issued watches/warnings just fine
- Ppl don't check the weather at 3am!
- we cant predict everything

I feel like they're missing a few other totally mysterious cases that are not at all related to helium or hydrogen 🙃
Twice a day, every day, meteorologists around the world simultaneously release weather balloons. But in recent months, fewer balloons are being launched in many corners of the United States.
In some cases, helium or hydrogen shortages are to blame.

What we lose when weather balloons don’t fly
Meteorologists are launching fewer weather balloons across the United States as the National Weather Service loses staff. Some worry forecasts will suffer.

Very concerned by “Y’all Watches” on weatherwise… the idea that these are areas that the weather service may be considering warnings is not OK. There is a substantial risk for confusion with weather service products. Add that our watches are not short fuse polygon products. That is warnings.

In December, I wrote a piece about people's declining ability to process information, to distinguish fact from opinion, etc, and how this might soften us up to become overly-dependent on AI. You could read it, but this guy just summarised it in two tweets!
