6) So WHAT DO? Connect with your community IRL. Balance your online info diet with offline time. Pay attention to who gains power and who loses voice when billionaires start buying the public square.

5) Lack of tech literacy + mystery algorithms + AI slop + government overreach == perfect storm of both extreme trust AND distrust in what people see online and who is behind it. Information disorder scales up in fascism.

4) When ppl don't understand how algorithms or platforms work, they invent explanations. From my paper: users construct folk theories about the way platforms work. Expect a wave of speculation about "what changed" after the deal (even if nothing did!). Go search "blocking Oracle" on TikTok.

3) The deal details are still unknown. A takeover by Ellison doesn’t necessarily mean the algorithm will change.
Given his recent comments about “keeping the masses subdued,” it’s fair to worry what “content moderation” might look like under new ownership. Media consolidation is always dangerous.

2) This connects back to my CHI 2025 paper on how people perceive “sticky” and “stubborn” content on their FYPs. Spoiler: it’s incredibly frustrating for users — and those frustrations reveal some deeper things I want to address:

1000% agree with doing this IRL! It's hard when it feels like the sense of community, in general, is so fragile. We have a lot of work to do.

I'd love to connect with other fellow researchers and practitioners in crisis informatics, social media studies, or news/information environments while I'm here in Yokohama! ☕

Over the weekend, I also had the opportunity to present at the News Futures workshop (sites.google.com/view/newsfut...), discussing my research agenda on "Weatherfluencers" (folks who live stream content on ongoing severe weather) and their role in crisis information ecosystems.
