I have an email offering me the position as editor in chief of a scammy-non-journal.

Am I more important than when the same crowd used to ask me to publish?

Are they more desperate?

Really excited by this. I have a graveyard of too-unreliable-to-use, too-nearly-working-to-throw-away printers.

A printer I can easily repair is a dream 😻
I've always thought that the need for a fancy paper transport in printers was unnecessarily complicated and fault prone. Why not just have a roll and a guillotine?

Now, here comes:

Finally, an open hardware printer you can actually understand, repair, and upgrade

Today was the day I killed sponsored stories in my Firefox. I kept them as long as I could, I know Mozilla needs funds; but at some point there is too much dangerous non-scientific crap.

@mozilla.org sort yourselves out. I want you to have money, but only if you have a shred of integrity

The component library used by OpenFlexure to create diagrams is now online at Wikimedia.

This was never meant to be a closed resource, it just never found its way into the open in full. Or if it did, I couldn't find it today and had to search my own computer!

We need a "slow computing" movement, the digital equivalent of "slow food".

We need to code better, with human care and attention to details, with true understanding of technology, achieving better performance with fewer resources.

We can do more with less if we believe in it.

Congratulations to the Biomanufacturing Group at ICGEB for winning a best exhibit prize at Maker Faire Trieste yesterday! 🏆 Their award-winning exhibit featured a number of OpenFlexure Microscopes, and aimed at help make biology accessible to everyone. 🔬

Took my OpenFlexure Microscope to a demo today. I decided to walk. It's nice to have a project portable enough you can carry it 4km along the Bath Skyline.

The best feeling for open source creators! A thing you designed appears somewhere and you didn't have to make it!!
These are some of the most exciting parts in any open source science hardware creator's job!

-People write to you to show you they independently made the thing you shared!
-People show you the cool remixes of your hardware (check out Michael Bunsen and Carter Urnes alternate mothbox box!)

I have made this for the next time someone asks me to use a "normal" word processor, because it is "easier for everyone".

It's easier for you, not me.

I believe in the concept of "The person doing the bulk of the writing picks the tooling".

Fulbright went and told all their fellows they need to scrub any mentions of climate change or things that aren't white men or else "their grants could get canceled and they won't get paid if they don't comply"

But then they just indefinitely paused everyone's payments regardless. Pitiful

Funding cuts affect people and specific cool projects. If anyone has funding leads, mothbox is a super cool project run by some of the best people.
We make a really cool open source tool called the Mothbox that's really taking off and starting to get used in lots of research!

But the USA's attacks on science means grants we applied to were cancelled and our Fulbright student is likely getting her funding cut.

Anyone wanna fund Mothbox?

One thing people in the UK are very bad at understanding is the real global reach of agencies like USAID and institutions like UNESCO. For all their faults these organisations really matter—which is why people write about them.
