Michael Mann to Bill Gates: You can’t reboot the planet if you crash it
What Gates is putting forward aren’t legitimate arguments that can be made in good faith. They are shopworn fossil fuel industry talking points.

Open Science and Epistemology with Haris Shekeris - Part 4
Part 4 of my conversation with Haris Shekeris, and is the last in this series. Haris and I wrap up our conversation about epistemology, democracy, open science, how people work together toward a common goal, and what Haris envisions as a potentially better system for all these things. I have found Haris to be a very open-minded person, who is interested in discussing these topics, and many others. Please reach out to him if you would like to discuss these ideas more.

The OpenCTD can be built for as little as $400 (I know, it used to be $350, tariffs are really hurting the small technology fabricators) and can be built, calibrated, and maintained by the end user.

Open Science and Epistemology with Haris Shekeris - Part 3
This is part 3 of a conversation with Haris Shekeris. This episode will make the most sense if you listen to part 2 first, but it can be listened to stand-alone as well. Haris talks more about democracy, gives his “elevator pitch” for why democracy is important, talks about the importance of transparency and active participation, and explains the “democratic moment”. This conversation was recorded via Jitsi, and there were some technical issues leading to things like echo and a few drops during the conversation. Those have been cleaned up as much as possible and my hope is that it will not detract from the information being shared by Haris. This conversation was originally recorded in the summer of 2024.

The user inputs a target volume for the measuring scoop, and then scipy traverses the search space and finds a scoop with the matching volume. There is a lot of potential in this kind of design optimization approach!

An aside: journalism exists in an attention economy where demand drives editorial decision making. If you find something you enjoyed, learned from and that moved you, share and share widely -- even four days late. I, and others, don't get to keep doing this stuff if no one reads it.
This piece is so good that I feel weird and kind of gross for both discovering it four days after the fact and sharing it after midnight.
But anyway this is an exceptionally affecting piece of writing and @roycerk2.bsky.social is a very good journalist.
But you all already knew that. Didn't you?

“There Was So Much Death.” A Toxic Algal Bloom Is Ravaging Australia’s Southern Coast—Warming Waters Are to Blame.
Three ingredients are required for an algal bloom to get going – temperature, the right conditions and food. South Australia had all the preconditions necessary, thanks to climate change.
